does any body's car eat up gas like crazy here? i got a 91 240

today i drove like around 20 miles or even less (for the people that know the nyc road-i drove from bklyn 6thave on the bqe to chinatown to pick up someone and straight to 103st northern blvd,) mainly all high way miles, and my car ate up 1bar of gas!(that's around 5 buck)

**** every other day i have to put in 10 buck for gas to reach around my 1/2 line on the gauge and i hardly go anywhere with the car, it just eat it all up!!

does any body know any usual thing that 240 go wrong that eat up gas? my friend told me that the s13 usually have leaky injector? but i dont' run rich. Also my idle is at 1000rpm , dont' know why. So any tips before i go all over my engine just to look for the problem?

Sounds to me your stuck in cold start mode. Idle should drop to around 650 rpm when the motor gets cold. You could have a stuck IAC valve, thermostat problems, or timing problem. Is your defroster or a/c on? This will raise your idle to 1000 rpms.

I have set my 240sx to idle at around 250-300rpms, maybe that makes a difference? Also, try shifting at 3,000rpms in every gear.

i dont no but im kinda surpised no 1 sayed check ur compression if ur leaking alot u will go though alot more gas since the compression from the combustion isnt nearly as good u could also have a fuel induction service done at ur local dealer those are nice... -- MoNK

nismo freak-yeah it does seems like my car is stuck on cold start mode, stuck iac valve? i check the faq on the old 240org forum and i read and i print it out too, it said i can adjust it which i did. I turned the adjusting screw all the way towards the right (which is to lower the idle speed and even thought it is all the way to the right it still on 1000rpm. This is the only iac valve i know of unless there's another one.My belt squeaks sometimes when i first start the car , maybe it slipped? and that retarted or advanced my timing now i have a mess up timing?

ninjak- i do shift at around everytime 3000rpm.

thenudDist- what is a fuel induction service?

i'm thinking maybe one of my sensors is mess up and now i have high idle , and bad fuel economy.

There is another valve which might be stuck open as well. Its the IAC-AAV. Its the valve that opens when you turn on the a/c and all that mess. It will stick your idle at 1000rpms. Its the Idle Air Control Auxillery Air Valve, or something like that. A belt slipping wont effect your timing. If the screw didnt effect your idle then my guess is the secondary idle valve might be stuck.

ninjak, why did you make your idle that low? Is it better for the engine or something?

if you running rich mostly you'll hve black smoke coming out of your pipe.

nismofreak- where can i find the 2nd idle valve at?(if it's confusing by typing, do they have it at the FAQ? and also let say i found it how do i test if it's stuck open, close, not working, etc.

im running rich in my car and there is no noticable black smoke. When is the last time you replaced your O2 sensor?

well i bought the car when it had 165,000miles, and i never replaced the o2, and i dont' ever think it was replaced.

well i was suspecting the o2 sensor too, that was probably the firsrt sensor i will check when i do an overall check on my car.

can running rich can make my idle high like that?

I think running rich is the obvious, it's WHY he's running rich we're concered with thus the cold start mode problem. I would definately check/clean that IACV, replace coolant temp sensor or at least check the connection for corrosion. Do the same with O2 sensor/MAF. Clean the TB while you're at it.

I don't know about the KA, but the VG30DE will spit 4x the normal amount of fuel per combustion cycle when in cold start mode. Do the math. I believe it does that to warm up the motor efficiently and get those cats doing their jobs for the environment quicker.

the other day, i noticed my car suddenly seemed to. . . rev faster and pick up speed a bit faster than it usually did and then i noticed that i would get 200miles on a full tank of gas rather than the usual 300mile per tank. Could I be running rich or something? There was a pretty bad freeze in texas here last week. . . if this post had nothing to do with the original thread then you can disregard what i posted :)

yeah if you running richer, you get more power out of the engine...

i just resetted my little meter that caculate how many miles you went. and with an estimate of the 1 line above from the 1/2 mark on the gas gauge to the 1/2 mark line, i used 1 bar and got me 30 miles(2/3 highway miles and 1/3 local ).

FuK! that's crazy! 1bar is like what? 5 gallon?

running rich doesent give you any more power does it? I was pretty sure you needed to run a certina A/F ratio that of course I dont remember but many cars come stock running slightly rich as running lean is far worse for it.

i'm not talking about running crazy rich, slightly rich give you some extra power i believe, and slightly lean give you a cleanner exhaust gas.
