Today my V had 191 miles on it when I performed my first gas-up. The car had 40 miles on it when I drove it out of the dealership. I added 161 miles. Tank took 9 gal of gas. The way I figured it, this V only got 16.77 mpg. Did I do the math right? If I did, dang this thing has to go back because that mileage is BAD. Yes, I am driving sensibly during this break-in period. I'm very careful to coast whenever I can, to let the CVT gear down as I get near a light. No fast breaking or rabbit starts. Really normal driving. It is city street driving and not highway, but how could I be getting around half the MPG they predicted with CVT yet?

There's about 50 or so miles I get on mine before the needle drops from full. Chances are it wasn't full when you got it, or wasn't filled to full when the trip meter was reset.

I'd wait until your second fillup to be concerned.

I get 17.88 mpg, but that still sounds bad. (161/9)

As this was your first fillup, I suspect the issue is much simpler than an arithmetic error. My guess is the tank simply wasn't completely full when you left the dealer. So the tank may have taken 9 gallons to fill, but you actually used less to drive your 161 miles. If the tank was even 3 or 4 gallons below empty when you left the dealer, that'd explain it.

Thanks for helping me out. Just realized I could have added my question to any of several MPG related threads....new here and to this kind of forum in general. My bad. Appreciate your comments.

Nothing wrong with creating a new thread for a new question.

It's very normal for this to happen on the first tank. You have no idea how far down the tank actually was before leaving (If the tank is sitting right at the F mark, it's actually between 1 and 2 gallons below full). You also have no idea how many times the dealer may have idled the car or taken it on test drives, and no idea what happened on those test drives.

Now, if your 2nd tank doesn't improve, THEN you can worry.

You mention, too, that it is all city driving. Don't expect much out of the CVT around town. True city, stop & go driving will probably get you 25 mpg at best.

Let us know how the second fillup goes.
