Hello all! I bought my car brand new in 1993 and had some great times with it. Still even now, I don't have any plans letting go of it and it has a little over 150,000 miles to it. Anyway, for a couple of years now, I've learned to live with an annoying starting problem that it has.

Most of the time I start the car, it clicks and sometimes a few times before it starts. I thought it was the starter so I replaced that but that didn't fix the problem. Its been a couple of years now and it still has that problem. I turn the key a couple of times while it clicks but eventually will start the car. It always starts the car eventually but the fact that I have to click it a few times is annoying. Anyone else experienced this problem or know the answer to this problem? Any help would surely be appreciated. I've searched this forum already and haven't found an answer othe than "Replace the Starter" but I've already done that. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to say that when you try to start it and it clicks, it also makes a buzzing noise until you let go of the key.

check the connections, cables, and battery. Your starter needs a LOT of amps to "spin" it. The clicking noise you hear is the solenoid engaging the drive gear to the flywheel. At the same time, the solenoid makes the conection to the starter for it to turn. If you decrease the amount of current to the starter (bad connection) it will ingage because the solenoid doesn't need but a few amps to engage, but the motor wont turn because it needs around 100-150 amps to do so. I'm sure it's gotta be a connection, wire(s), or battery. Just give'em all a good cleaning and see if that works.

P.S. sorry for the small lesson. We're on starters and alternators this week in class and saw a good time to use my knowlege

You know, I was thinking the same thing. I do have lots of "T" taps on my wiring especially the ignition area because of my alarm. I had it professionally installed with the Smart windows and Ignition starter. How hard is it to follow up/replaced the ignition and surrounding wiring? Is it a harness that I can just replace and be done with it?

from the ignition, it's not too bad. Surrounding gets messy... how long ago did you get the alarm installed and where at?

I got the alarm installed in the car about a year after I bought the car. Right before that, I had very intermittent issues with the starter already. I had it diagnosed at the dealership since it was still under warranty but they can't duplicate the problem. The Good Guys installed the alarm here in California and the starter problem got worst about 3 years after the alarm got installed.

About 3 or 4 years ago, I had a problem with the alarm and since the alarm had lifetime warranty, I brought it back to The Good Guys and they replaced the alarm but they didn't have it in stock so I had to drive around with no alarm. Without the alarm though, the starter problem wasn't as bad although it was still there. That's why I thought the problem had to be in the ignition wiring after I got the Starter, Coil, alternator and some other stuff replaced. I haven't taken it to the dealership just yet. I kind of gotten used or immune to the problem since it always starts after a couple of tries but does get annoying and embarassing.
