No it's not scientific. If you are familiar with the Top Gear series, it's more entertainment than anything. Still, the general conclusion they arrived at is pretty fair. It's not what you have but how you drive it. An under-powered car trying to keep a constant high rate of speed isn't going to be efficient at doing what it was never designed to do. If they had done a stop-and-go gridlock traffic test, the prius would've come out ahead of the M3.
