did a search and didn't find this symptom. the other day, and it scarred the sh*t out of me, this INCREDIBLY LOUD siren squeal came out of, i think the rear passenger side speaker. i turned it off, and it did it again when i turned it on. seems to happen when i first get in and drive. might happen 6 times then stop.

i'm sure it's gonna die soon, and i plan on replacing the whole system, anyway. my questions are, has anyone had this super loud siren come out of a speaker, and can u just pull the plug on the speaker if it keeps getting worse? not the best thing to have happen with a date in the car (last night!!!!!).thanks guysjeff

Would you call it a squeal or a high pitched tone?

Off the cuff, I'd say a wire (signal or power) is grounding. More than likelty when it stops making the tone the speaker is shutting off, not just stopping.

Assuming the best - it's a singal (or ground) wire, and pulling the plug stops the nosie.

Assuming the worst - it's a power wire, and pulling the plug (at the speaker) stops the noise, but leaves a "hot" wire grounding at times.

Might be worth doing some additional investigating, or posting in the Car Audio Forum and see if Simmsled has any thoughts.

Leaving the whole thing turned off, may be the best/safest option for now.

Edit, half the post got lost :(

I thought this was the confirming signature for amplifier failure.

Could be, unfortunately, I was applying my car audio knowledge to this issue. I don't have any trouble shooting history with Bose specifically.

must be "slowly" going. drove the Q for about 15 min. today w/ the radio on, no noises. i'm sure the amp is doomed.

what happens is the minature electrolytic capacitors leak the electrolyte and fail. An easy fix once the amps are out.

Had to redo all 7 amps and the head unit of the BOSE in my sl-600

Radioshops here in Houston are very familiar with the problem.

I had the same experience with that high-pitch hissing/squealling noises that you had mentioned, however the only difference is that it's a problem for my front passenger side. When it gets worst (after several months), the sound would go on and on for 15-20 minutes and eventually it disappears and then comes back after an hour of play. Now, after 3 months, that side of the speaker would continuously hiss/squeal non-stop. Can't find a cheap replacement at the salvage yard other than a '94-'96 speaker set, which they told me I have to re-wire because it wouldn't fit '90-'93 models. So I ended up un-plugging the passenger side in order to enjoy the music again, but can't ever enjoy the full potential of the Bose until the defects are replaced.

It's not thespeaker it's the speaker mounted amplifier--the miniature electrolytic capacitor fails. replace just that $0.50 part and all is well.

Where do I order the .50 part you are referring to texasoil?

Could you confirm again that's it's the same amplifier for both the rear speaker problem nuQ has as well as my front passenger speaker?

Had the same thing happen. That is one LOUD noise! It's the rear speaker gone bad. There was a recall on 90-92 Bose rears, Bose replaced or repaired for free. Believe it or not they can smoke and start on fire. Have your dealer do a search for the recall. The best other solution is from http://carstereohelp.com/infiniti.htm I'm shipping my fronts to them today. Go to their site and read all the question and answer stuff AND their free detailed instructions on how to remove the speakers. FORGET all advice about substituting systems or buying replacement or repair on Ebay. Learn from my errors. New ones are $400 by the way, so that is not a reasonable alternative, and that's JOES price, he can also repair for about $200 but he has to send them out so the price is out of his hands. The guys at the site above quote $90. AND they offer a guarantee.

unless one is skilled at PC board repair, best to send them to a pros atcarstereo above. Real easy to fry IC's on the board.

The Bose system (working) does give close to perfect sound reproduction in the car.

Yea! I don’t know about after market, but The Bose in my Q is one of the best stereos that I've ever herd in a car. Look for the original Bose speakers on E bay and replace it. You see them on E bay every now and then. If you go aftermarket, then you have to change to a head unit to one that doesn't match with your dash.

Forget EBay, I did that. You go to time, trouble and expense to get them out and the Ebay ones in. Just to have the Ebay replacements blow up shortly. Pay the $90 per each and get them repaired and fully updated by the guys I mentioned above. They are then as new and guaranteed. I got 10,000 miles out of my EBay fronts before they also blew up. Makes sense as my originals went at 125,000 miles and the car my Ebay ones came out of had 115,000 miles on it when it was salvaged. The Ebay ones may be older than yours and about to go anyway. It would appear the useful life may be around 125,000. Would you replace your shocks or knock sensors with used ones off a salvage car? As Dennis is fond of saying replace WEAR items with new or rebuilt, not salvage. Speakers are a wear item and the guys I mentioned are the answer. They even have VERY detailed removal instructions on their site and a VERY logical explanation/question and answer format that can resolve ANY question you might pose here regading non Bose relacement EBay repair and the various scams that go on. AND they answer their phone. But you don't really need to call, print out the shipping form after filling it in, pack them according to their instructions and wait for good music in a couple weeks. They even answer questions on their site like "Can I still run the Stereo with a speaker or two speakers uninstalled without hurting it?" Answer is yes, by the way.

One more thing....They appear to repair ALL brands of factory stereos.
