Yellow 4wd light is staying on, need some help

Hello all I am new to this board, but I was wondering what it means when the yellow 4wd light stays on? My wife's rig is having that problem. I know that it isn't in 4 wheel, but if you switch it to auto it does go into 4 wheel even though the pavement is dry. Also when you start the pathy the dash indicator for the 2wd/4wd, like what KoukiS14 has as a avatar, lights up for a second, then goes away and doesn't come back on. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

Check your owners manual, sounds normal to me if the temps. outside are very low. Mine stayed on until the engine / transmission warmed up. It's been in the negatives the past few days (-12 degrees today without the windchill!). If it's doing this and it isn't cold, there might be something wrong.

Its was pretty cold a fw weeks ago, but is above freezing now. It didn't used to only go into 4wd when in the switch was in the auto position, but now as soon as you switch it in auto it is only in 4wd. Also the indicator lights on the dash would always be on with something lit up , but now a few seconds after you start the car the indicator goes blank.
