I am enthralled by 240z's as well as the RB series engines. I am planning on combining both into one ridiculous project that will probably span a my college years.

Anyway after I fell in love with the 240z's, about 3 months ago lol, I have been looking with relatively no luck at all. Everything is a rustbucket with no potential.

I found one recently but im wondering if it's even worth a try.

I posted alot of threads in gen chat about what kind of beginner's car would be good to learn auto mechanics and tuning on. I think I would really like to pick up either a 240sx or a 240z.

I recognize that using one of these two cars would be a good idea with the RB swap in mind. I am looking for a rolling chassis for either type of car and I came across this z today.

SO basically to sum everything up: I need advice on if to go for a z, because I am a noob, or a 240sx to put an RB20DET into.

tl;dr: Love nissan, love 240sx, love 240z, and love RB series. which one, keep in mind im a noob.kthx

pics of z in question

topside doesn't look bad, pans and rails are shot...and that underside pic...how is the car supported? if the lift arms aren't under the rockers where are they?

FWIW the 240Z is a whole lot easier to work on than the 240SX, but if oyu must have an RB get the S13/14, it's less work to do the swap into their chassis, me, not a big fan of the rb's, nto that I have a real problme with them, they are just overpriced and over rated, the l6 is what the rb was birthed form

and when shopping for old z cars, look for the most solid chassis you can find, it doesn't take much metal work to make up the cost difference bewteen a rustbucket and a good solid chassis

As cool as the RB series is I'd stick with a L series in the s30. You can make a ton of power for that light of a car.

It doesn't look bad until you see it underneath. For a beginner project it's okay... but I don't see this being done anytime soon with the amount of rust on those pans and you'd have to replace the floors completely. You'd have to spend a lot of money to have stuff welded or do like me and learn yourself.

It depends on how much work and time you're willing to put into it... but it sounds like you may want to go with a 240SX

Good luck!

take it from a guy that bought an old z while in college

bad decision

stick with an s13 especially if you cant do your bodywork

i bought one i had to scrap because it was so rotted out...
