$17,000 for a loaded Yaris, eh?

Oh look, you can get a CVT SL with some options for that! :P

I've spent quite a bit of time in my friend's '07 Yaris 2-door hatch, and I must say, it's a much more compelling buy at a little over $12k than over $17k. I am impressed with the hatch's peppiness (with the 5-speed) and other assorted design elements that are minor complaints on my Versa.

For instance, the rear "trunk" area has a crudely hinged plastic lid that covers the spare tire. I have to remove 3 large inserts to get to our spare tire - the floor mat, the hard plastic cover, and the foam spacer. Very annoying the one time we got a flat.

Center mounted gauges aren't my thing - what I dislike most about them is the CHEAP empty space behind the wheel. All that uniform plastic back there just screams Fisher & Price. The interior is quite spartan and definitely makes me enjoy the soft-touch trim that is well placed throughout the Versa interior.

For a $12 new car, I'm impressed with its handling and refinement - I dare say it might be quieter than a 10 year old Camry, or at least on par, which I think is fine for this segment.

BUT, fully loaded, the Versa is a compelling buy. The Versa leads the class in amenities and probably is in the top running for performance/refinement. Also, the Yaris lacks a 4-door hatch, although the new Scion xD is just a Scion-badged Yaris.

Now if I could see a head-to-head Versa/Fit test in C&D or the like where they opt for a loaded SL - then I'd be happy. I think pound for pound, whatever 'sportiness' edge is given to the Fit, I think the Versa makes up for it with character and amenities. But yes, I'm biased, and many of these qualities are purely subjective.

Before i got my versa i checked out the Yaris and once i saw the interior in person ...i opted out of the yars....its so plain.... it makes u fee llike ur buying a stripped down go kart...one of the reasons i actually got the versa was the comfy interior and the higher class feel/look of the inside as with most nissans.

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, when I went to the Toyota dealer and the sales rep found out I'd just looked at the Versa he wouldn't even unlock a Yaris to let me look inside. He knew it would be a waste of time! (Of course, it was a waste of time trying to sell me on a Corolla or Scion, too!)

Here in Australia, my Parents have the Yaris Sedan, and I've got a Tiida (Versa) hatch.

I think that the Tiida feels like a better car all round - the Yaris interior feels cheap and the seats suck balls. The Yaris handles slightly better, but I think that's mostly due to the fact Tiidas come with awful tyres over here. Once my new wheels & tyres are bolted up in a few weeks I think it'll be a different story

Equipment wise - the Tiida (versa) ****s all over the Yaris. I got ALOT more for my money.

In the end though I think they're both really good cars with alot of great features for the money and you can't go wrong with either. The Yaris doesn't go too bad considering its only a 1.5L as well.
