Im trying to buy a used transmission but unsure which one to buy. Why is there 2 different types of transmission for the car? One is "thru 10/02" and the other is "from 11/02" whats the difference? And which would i need for my car its a 2003 m45

Look on the driver side door jam for the production date of your car, that will tell you the date you need to shoot for. Not sure if they are interchangeable though, maybe one of the Y34 owners will know more.

From what I read on another post the 03 M45 transmission will never let the engine come close to redline, but the 04 does now that may just be programming which would not care which trans is actually installed, but that might be one reason for the difference

Like Gene said, the 03 trans will upshift for you at some RPM even when you have it in manual. The 04 behaves like the 06+ trans. Say you have it in manual mode and come to a stop, it drops down to 1st and holds it there until you bump the rev limiter at 50mph on the highway. Coming from an 03, that surprised me a little.

So, about those production dates I'm not sure whether they are referring to the transmission or car assembly. Because cars thru 10/02 are actually 2002 model years and maybe very little of 2003...so that will mostly seem like 2002 Q45 models.
Best bet in this situation is to call a dealer with your VIN and they'll tell you exactly which part number applies to you.

Even IF it's just a programming difference, the dealer will most likely still try to get you to buy the "correct" one. I'm a little adventurous and I'd use whichever one I can find easier/cheaper.

Ok wow I didnt even know that about the 03's well that sucks. I had an 04 originally until it got total 2 years ago. Thanks I will check with the dealer tomorrow and hurry up and buy one. My AT CHECK light would flash when I start the car and I know thats got to be serious. Im getting a p1772 code anyone know anything about that? Sometimes my car would be stuck in first gear until I shut it off and turn it back on. Thats when the AT CHECK light would start flashing then my car would run fine.

P1772 is Low Coast Brake Solenoid Valve. It's one of the seven solenoid valves in the valve body. You can only get that as an aftermarket component (31941-1XA02), or else you'd have to change the vb unit. Try Rostra for the solenoid.

The 10th digit of the VIN would indicate the model year.

Who or what is "Rostra"?

So I should buy that part and get it fixed rather than buy a used transmission?

The solenoid option could be hit or miss. But if you could afford a used transmission, then I'd suggest a new valve body.

+1 on this ^. Those transmissions are typically stout and trouble free.

Budhables, I am usually the one to ask the simple & silly questions. Have you by any chance had the fluid checked for level and condition?
As DoubleE says above, our RE5R05A transmissions can usually handle quite a lot thrown at them.

Thanks for sharing. I suppose this extends beyond Nissan?
I just verified it works for an M45 and a Jaguar.

Budhabless, where are you located btw?

I think it applies to North America. It's not the same for Nissan Europe for example.
