X2 on taking advantage of the recall.
Main problems on these cars are oil consumption and loss of power due to failing cam/crank position sensors. Look into installing a oil catch can in line with the PCV valve. Keep an eye on the oil level, and the car should last you quite a long time. Also, buying used parts can still set you back quite a bit of cash, even salvage parts on ebay still go for a pretty penny. The OEM in dash cannot be replaced with an aftermarket head unit, there is not an adapter available on the market. Most people just add one where the cassette player is and splice into the stock wiring for the speakers.
As far as suspension, there are a couple companies that offer coilovers and air bags. Air bags are obviously a lot more expensive and I believe both require some custom fab work for fitment. For the fronts, you need to cut the shock tube and weld in the new one, or buy from a company that offers the entire shock-hub assembly. For the cheapest way to go lower, you can get lowering springs, but obviously ride quality will suffer. Just do some searching, there are a bunch of threads about suspension setups.
