I recently replaced the transmission filter on my 97 with 233K miles. Magnet inside was slightly covered and pan was clean. After reading previous posts I concur with the assessment that the flter can be cleaned. The material inside the filter was limited.

Also, just to be provocative I'll also add that I reused not only the pan bolts, but also the gasket!! I did smear some non-hardening gasket maker on the gasket though.

pics soon.

You cut it open and examined it under magnification like Q45tech? I am impressed! Of course that filter would not work so well now, eh?

You're just a risk-taking daredevil, aren't you?

(Clean and re-use your oil filter, and THEN I'll be impressed! )

I did cut it open and hopefully Wes will be able to put pics up soon.

As for magnification-do you mean the glasses that you old men have to wear?

doesnt surprise me that the filter was so clean,it really is just a strainer meant to stop chunks of a broken transmission from circulating creating more damage for rebuilder to fix-my thought is to replace it once, then once you see for yourself, just keep up with annual fluid exchanges using the best atf you can affordFollowing this method has got me over 200k so far on original transmission....oh,and also replace THE REAL FILTER once or twice, the fine paper one up behind the radiator!
