I'm about to replace the valve cover gaskets on my 97 and am torn as to whether to replace the spark plugs while I'm in there. The car has 227K miles and the plugs have about 150k miles on them-maybe I could get another 50K?

Just kidding.(Tech and Maxnix just suffered strokes).

The plugs were replaced with OEM at 196K so they have 31K on them. what do you guys think?

Also what's the difference between the two plugs below-other than price. i thought iridium plugs were usually more expensive.

NGK IX iridium 5464 BKR5EIX-11 0.044 DOHC $6.95 NGK Double Platinum 2647 PFR5G-11 0.044 DOHC $11.95

He only has 30 some K on them though. Still, since he's gonna have it all pulled apart, I'd do them anyhow. I have the IX in mine and am happy with them.

Well, fi the old ones went in with hightemperature lubrication, they should be fine for a few thousand more. Change interval was more frequent on the early VH41DE than the later ones, but the main problem is galling.

The Laser Platinums were designed for the VH series. Any others were not.Always consult the FSM.

I think you mean the VH was designed with the Laser Plat's. I seriously doubt that NGK made the plugs specifically for the VH since all the plugs they make are used in multiple applications. Iridium IX are the same exact specs but use Iridium instead of Platinum.

My point is that since he's gonna have all that stuff torn apart anyhow, he might as well drop another 50 bucks on plugs and not have to think about it for another 60k.

From what I've read on the net it appears that iridium is the more durable plug and rquires less energy to fire, increasing performance.

So why is the plat plug twice as much?

I don't know, but it also says in NGK's site that the Iridium IX, NOT the Platinum, is the best and most advanced plug they've ever made. Like I said, I'm happy with mine, car feels "snappier" than before.

Well, the Iridiums were available back then, but they neither were specified nor recommended by Nissan. Don't know why, but they probably do.

The Laser Plats work so perfectly, why change?

Unless you're feeling lucky.

I felt lucky and got the iridium, exact same design except the center electrode is smaller due to iridium being more durable, lasting longer and needing less material that can wear away. NGK also said that it takes 5000 less volts to fire this plug, does that mean that those extra 5000 volts are going to the tip of the plug?

It's not just spark, but also how long it sparks. Nissan had access to any type of plug when they designed the engine. They specified the ones that worked best.

Iridium plugs are a fairly new thing, they did not exist 18 years ago when the VH was designed.

What do you mean "how long it sparks"?

Nissan chose the plug that worked the best but I bet they also considered price, as wll as supply, as well as favors owed, promises made etc etc.

Nissan and Infiniti are not infallible. The early chain guides and fried trannies are Hyundai like mistakes.

why mess around when the factory speced plugs will last at least 117,000 miles without a misfire? {dont ask me how I know this}
