When I first start the car and put it into drive there is a light metallic rattling sound from underneath. It is rpm specific so I assumed something might be loose. On checking the exhaust system there were 2 corroded and loose brackets that seem to clamp around the heat shield. I removed them becoause they were completely free to move. Anyway the rattling is still present and I have verified it is not from the heatshield at these positions so I am continuing to look.

Also while looking underneath there seems to be a strange looking mounting plate on the cross member in the center of the car. The plate is made up of about 10 - 15 shim like plates. One of these was delaminating and came off when I touched it. I don't understand what the function of this is and why it would be a stack of thinner plates rather than a solid block???
