My '97 Q45t has always had dealer-serviced oil changes for its 162k life. Today, while having other work done at an indepentant shop, they put in 10-30 pure synthetic oil, rather then the Castrol blended 5-30 the dealer here uses. In the past(with BMWs),any car with high mileage changed from mineral based to synthetic oil had a good chance of delevoping engine seal leaks from the thinner, more efficient(at cleaning) oil. Will the change from blended to pure synthetic possibly lead to seal leaks in the Q,or am I just too paranoid?

I think this is a case by case situation. The full synthetic will clean out the crud in the engine and oil will probably seep thru the old VC/seal gaskets. That's what happened to my car. My vc never leaked until I put full synthetic oil in my car. I went back to dino oil, but they are still leaking. I fixed the vc on the passenger side, just haven't done the driver's side yet. Once you start to smell oil hitting the hot exaust, then you will know for sure.

I think you are fine, and no worry about leaks.

I really thought the M1 5W-30 was not right for the VH, and run 10W-30 M1 predominantly.

Just seemd a little thin even in Seattle winters. It seems to be a different formulation thatn the 10W-30.

I always ran at least 5 qts. of 10W-30 with it.

Thanks for the help;seems they're going from the 5-30 Castrol blended to pure synthetic won't require me to promptly remove it to prevent leakage..

Leakage should not be a problem. High temperatures in summer operation might be.

Thanks again for your help..the last was kind of an LOL statement.

After 10 years down here, anything less than 60 degrees seems downright cold.
