I am preparing to R&R the knock sensors on my 98 Q45. I understand the intake does not need to be removed but I have a few questions on the removal process. Are the knock sensors attached by two phillips screws? What is the best angle to remove the knock sensors? Do I need to remove any parts off the intake to gain access to them? Any tricks of the trade would be appreciated greatly. Thank You.

haven't done the ks yet on my fy33. but i can tell you that they are held on by 12 mm head hex screws (not phillips).even if you don't *have* to remove the plenum, might want to anyway---will be a whole lot more accessible, and then you can clean the intake to spotless. change ALL the rubber while under there, then you wont go back under the plenum for another 100k+.also, was an ITB for the upper to lower plenum gasket leaking.

From my viewpoint it appears the easiest access to the KS's is through the back of the engine through the opening next to the transmission dipstick. I should be able to get a wrench or socket on the KS bolts. Does anyone have other suggestions on how to get to the knock sensors.

I removed the fan, alternator and radiator as well as a couple of hoses and found them (K/S) accessible under the intake from the front of the engine. It really wasn't too hard and had few obstructions other than a coolanthose under the intake.

Good luck!!

I replaced my knock sensors, harness, radiator hoses, clamps, etc. I think I have a small antifreeze leak. Did you use gasket maker on the knock senor bolts when you installed them?

it was just a small amount of antifreeze. i blew it off the intake with compressed air. It's gone and hasn't came back. It must of just been left over from the install. Thanks for your help. Everything is working fine now.

The best way to do it is through the front, But I didn't remove the radiator, or the fan!
