I found some interesting info about dreaded dropping resistor on ALLDATA.Quote »1997 Infiniti Q45 V8-4130cc 4.1L DOHC MFI (VH41) Vehicle Level Transmission and Drivetrain Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Dropping Resistor Specifications Specifications Notes Resistance 0.8 ohms at 77 deg F [/quote]Last time I masure it was close at 14 ohms inside in my garage and at room emperature (when I removed it) Strange I'd say!Mybe that is why shifting has changed over time since dropping resistor has been degrading!I'll get a new one and will report!

It could very well have an impact on shifting...it's a common problem in the P10 G20s for the drop shift resistor to go bad, and it does cause bad shifting.

The 99' FSM says on page AT129 the resistance should be 11.2 - 12.8 Ohms.

You are correct, in FSM that I have it says the same 11.2-12.8Ohms!I don't know who to believe Weird!

Hope it helps. It's located in between P/s reservoir and coolant expansion tank! That's on Y33!

I;ve read that about G20. Something about corrosion/water intrusion causing irratic/harsh shifts/

I'd belive the fsm and some empirical data. Everryone has measured in the 12-14 ohm range.as a note, as the resistance goes up, the shifts get harder. if it was 0.8 ohm, i doubt that the solenoid would see enought current to have any effect on line pressure.

i'm presently running 68ohm 10 watt [hg50]to keep the 2-3 in the realm of 'okay'. haven't messed with the fy33, it shifts fine.

Do you have this in any sort of heat sink ? Could you provide brief details on connecting it ? THX !

Look at the curent figures difference when using 0.8(15A) ohms, 14(0.85714A) or 68(0.17647A), given system voltage is 12V. 15 Amps would give a good jolt to a solenoid, possibly even killing poor solenoid. I am not taking Power output of that solenoid (180 W at .8 Ohms) What a difference. I would think the higer(numerically) resistane\ce, the firmer shifts would be!I get pretty firm shift even with stock (original) dropping resistor. When I used 68 ohms resistor, shifts have gotten harder and unpleasant OD (I use OD button for engine braking and in town) operation. I'd assume if I used 0.8 ohms resistor, shifts would smooth out some! What do you guys think!Cheers!

Yes it was located in an exposed location which allowed water to get on it.

nope. call me crazy. with the lower current, it doesn't get too hot.

here's the pic. i know i know cheesy hook up. i would like to hack up an old one and connectorise it. but then again, i'm going to change the solenoids out [sitting around for 3 months now] one of these days, and maybe won't need the trim resistor anymore.

it's the brown doo dah.

I've relocated it since I tried using different resistor. I've put it on a strut tower behind FSTB. Gets better air flow

Have you changed out the solenoids yet? If so did you change them all, did you use stock or aftermarket parts?TIA

man, you dig up old threads of mine.....

yes in dec 2005. i used aftermarket solenoids from an outfit in texas. macko distributiong or something like that. they were about 30% of oem from IoS. pedigree and MTBF--who knows. they are doing fine so far.

Do you think new solenoids might correct a slow 2-3 upshift?

not likely. it didn't solve it in my case.

try some BG quik clean first to make sure all the varnish is out.i'm not gonna detail the whole procedure--sorry, but if you search on trans flush you should be able to get an idea.last resort (can't go back) is to drill out 2 holes in the vb separator plate to increase the pressure on the high clutch and band release.
