Hello, im new to this site and i had a question. I just bought a z32 n/a diff and id like to know what real gains you get from swapping out a y33 diff for the z32 diff. As of now the mods i have on my y33 are: HKS intake, and muffler delete with dual exhaust (still have all cats), also have the g35 rays wheels which are pretty light. Compared to when i bought my Q its alot faster 0 to 60 in about 6.9-7.1 seconds. will swapping in a z32 diff make a noticeable difference? and where can i get the swap done( since i have no mechanical experience ) i live in Los Angeles south central area, if anyone on here knows how or has done this swap before thats around the area i'd really appreciate the help, Thanks

Welcome to NICO.

The swap is pretty straight forward, everything is bolt in. Be sure to replace the bushings when you're in there, poly bushings are good for that.

You should see about a 10% change, including about a 10% decrease in gas mileage.

You will have to change the gear on the speedo sensor for the speedo to be correct, it will read about 10% slower.

Thanks wes, im happy theres a actual website where i can get some info about y33's

Yeah ive heard it aint too hard to do but id rather get it done at a shop, theres a local shop where they work on 240sx and they do diff swaps there i talked to the guy there and said he'd do it since hes familiar with the r200 diffs.

and yeah ive been reading about this and youre right its 10% increase of somethings and 10% decrease as well, i dont want the miles adding up so right after i do the swap i'll be sure to get speedo corrected.

One final question, is there really a clearnce problem? does the z32 diff hit the suspension? i read you have to grind it down or something

I got the swap done today, took it for a drive and it pulls a lot better, the speedo is off, and the issue about the fitment, well I just changed the cover to the y33 cover, a lot of people say the z32 covers are better but once you open it its pretty much the same thing all without having to worry about it hitting or not fitting right.

I'm now going to put my diff for sale on craigslist (los angeles), if anybody is interested I'm asking 150 for it obo

Good deal! You have two options for changing the speedo.. First thing is get a gear for the speed sensor for an N/A Z32.. I am not 100% sure if this works but might be worth a try.. The problem is that the gear is smaller in diameter and it may not mesh properly inside the trans. You might do a search on that if you're interested.

Here's what I did on my car..... www.dakotadigital.com, get the SGI-5. Splices in line to the speed sensor, you can tuck it basically anywhere for a clean setup. Works great, once you get it calibrated it works great, and if you ever decide to change to a different tire size you can tweak your speedo that way. Will run you about $100..

Is that really the only options i have, well besides leaving it it as it is. i thought maybe a yellow box would work to get the speedo correct, will it? if not im going to look into that SGI-5, $100 aint bad, would it work the same for a y33 though?

Yellow box won't work on Nissans at least of this generation, don't waste your time with the yellow box I have 2 that i tried and will probably never use.

Thanks thats good to know, for now i think i'll just deal with the speedo being off while i look into what i'll do.

Off topic, is there any other mods besides cai, diff swap, and muffler delete that'll help with better accleration for y33's ???

Hey Fellows,

I had SZ put a set of Leader 4:10 gears into a TT diff housing so I can interchange gear ratios for what ever I decide to do, 1/8 or 1/4 by swapping out diff housing units. I have the auto transmission and is it as simple as putting an NA speed sensor gear (orangeish one) onto the speed sensor shaft that is in it now to get correct speedo readings or is more complicated than that? I thought I could just pull speed sensor, swap Blue (3:69) to Orangeish (4:10) and put it together and go? Is it that easy or :wtf2: ......LOL.

Thanks,
SLE-PR

Well the problem is that the speed sensor gear is a larger diameter than the factory one. You can get the gears for like $10 so it may work and is probably worth a try...

I know when I did my 5-speed swap, since I used an N/A trans I was going the opposite direction, so the gear was smaller than the factory one, and it did not work.

Thanks elwesso, I decided to call the pro's.....Seb,, and he says to just change gears but have to cut the bracket that's molded to the side of the sensor and reposition it by welding it back to the correct spot after the gear change cuz it needs reposition, for some reason, so once again.. :wtf2: ...LOL. Then I guess I better get another one (speed sensor) cuz if I intend on swapping out gear cases for which ever ratio I decide to use then I wont have to pyss around with that all the time then, Huh?

My next question would be, what is the difference between the TT and NA speed sensor, when you have to change gears.......Hence, I presume they will NOT be the same physically, in all dimensions, otherwise a person would be able to switch speed sensor with appropriate gear and just do a quick r & r on them, then just plug and "play" :dblthumb: and that would be to easy.....lamo! But I do LOVE doing all my own work on these Babe's, there's some kind of high or euphoric feeling doing everything and then getting a good dynotune from Greg and Seb. I can hardly wait to get to a track 1/8 or 1/4 and just see what this 600++ rwhp will do :naughty:
