I recently became the proud owner of a 1998 Q45t, King Karl Gustav (as named by my Swedish mother-in-law who). I have noticed that the transmission "free revs" for 1 to 2 seconds when shifting from 2nd to 3rd range before dropping into 3rd. This only happens when accelerating in "Drive" under very light throttle (15 to 20 mph). Under heavier acceleraton, the the shifts are smooth and clean. Is this symptom a harbinger of bad things to come? If so, is there anything I can do to prevent future trouble? I would really appreciate any help/advice anyone would care to provide.

Maitenance history? Mileage? Date of last mechanical fluid exchange and pan drop and clean, and filter replacement? When was the ATF cooler installed? How does the ATF look in the white paper towel test? What kind of driving?

Operation does not sound good, but do not recall anyone here having to replace a FY33 transmission yet. It will occur as the miles driven increase, especially without perfect maintenance and a cooler.

Milage = 85K, mostly driven "around town" by a middle-aged female. I need to get the maintenance record from an Infinity dealer. White towel test shows that although the ATF is red, it is darker than new. I neglected to mention that the symptom is not consistent. I work in an area where speed is strictly controlled and 2nd to 3rd falter happens about one of every 5 trips home.

Get the pan, gasket, filter and one way bolts from Joe, get 3 cases of M1 ATF, get a B&M 70264 or similar cooler from Summit Racing and get it flushed. If you have it done by a shop that has the Sun machine, get the PS extracted and replaced with the M1 ATF. I guarantee it will need it

. Oh yea, no ATF cooler. I am going to do pan drop and clean/filter replacement/fluid exchange next weekend and will also install a cooler at that time. Is the Haden "Rapid Cool" PN #677, 71/2" X 11" fin plate the cooler of choice? Where is the optimal mounting location? You don't know how much I appreciate the info.

Search for my previous post regarding trans cooler install. I have done it a few weeks ago. Keeps things cool! Planning on install of temp gauge when I do pan drop!
