What is best depends on what is in the engine. Lost of sludge needs a MOA type package--lots of detergent, easy on the solvent. You need to redissolve the sludge--otherwise it can (will) sluff off and plug up oil return passages and oil screens. Not good for the engine. If its loaded up with varnish--you should go easy--multiple MMO treatments and high detergency again. A shock treatment with heavy varnish will cause it tocraze, crack, and flake off--plugging lots of fine orifices like HLA's etc. Not pretty. A light amber/yellow layer (less than a few sheets of paper thick) can be safely attacked with a solvent treatment in one shot.
