A Y-pipe is supposed to be a little more turbulent and promote unequal flow of your exhaust since both banks of cylinders are dumping exhaust into one union.

An X pipe allows the gasses to be equalized as they're expelled.

An X pipe is better, but you won't really notice any solid differences until the high end of your power band. However, it'll sound cooler the rest of the way though the rev range and at idle.

The other option is true dual exhaust! It'll sound REALLY cool.

Thanks for the info man, I read threads on other forums when I Googled it and some folks said Y pipe under 500HP and X Pipe for over 500HP, obviously none our Ms are 500HP, does the HP matter for the either application?
I just wanted to ask other members opinions which set up is better based on experiences or what they've had.

Thanks - Wing.

Not a problem, anytime!
Personally, I've seen both applications on high and low powered cars. No matter what the case, you'll make a few more ponies (or at least make it sound like it has more!) with an X pipe.

Alternatively, you could work on replacing stock with a larger exhaust pipe diameter. However, for each incremental increase, you potentially lose some power down low due to slower flow of the exhaust, but will increase power up high. I think HKS and Stillen make some M series full bolt on exhaust systems.

Is it not possible to get hp without the increased noise? I've thought about the exhaust thing, but all I ever hear from people attached to that is increased noise, and I'm all about my quiet and music.

You could do what I've done.
I have a turbo Miata, but don't want the stupid buzzing sound of a larger exhaust and muffler. I've taken a bit of a loss in power by retaining the stock muffler and having a 3" exhaust dump into it. Its no louder than stock and doesn't attract any unwanted attention from the local police and teenagers who want to race because OMGZOMG IT SOUNDS LIKE MY CIVIC!

The few hp I'm missing from a proper high flow muffler doesn't bother me enough to have annoying sounds from the tail pipe.

I am looking to go customer exhaust with slightly bigger shinier tips than stock while still retaining the quad look.
Just trying to figure out which best Y-Pipe or X-Pipe, I know a lot of members are using G35/G37 Y-Pipe.
Is there any difference between G35 & G37 Y-pipe? How different are they from M35 and will they both fit on M35?

I'm not able to answer your question, but someone else may. Also, check out the 4 pages in this thread. At the bottom of the first page you'll find some video clips that might help you out and the rest of the content may apply to you.

Ok, just to reiterate, I can get the dual pipes, but keep my stock muffler and exhaust, and that will give me increased hp with stock sound? Now the final question is if the cost of the pipes and the diminished hp increase is worth it. From what I'm told the whole exhaust setup would give me a 12 hp increase, should I expect maybe a 3hp loss by keeping the stock muffler and exhaust? (Taking in consideration I know you can't give an EXACT number) How much are these dual pipes?

I can't speak from experience on the quality of the sound in an M, but its definitely similar to stock in my Miata.
True dual exhaust will give you a better power increase, but the mufflers will negate that some. Probably not enough to really notice.
Some systems are $600, others are more expensive. The cheaper option is to go to an exhaust shop and have them ditch all of the factory stuff between the headers and the mufflers and install 2.25" exhaust & an X pipe. However, watch for emissions.
Here is a good, recent thread:

If all your are after is 10-20 horses without any major modifications, you may want to consider a tune. There is a company called UpRev who does VQ engines in the G and M cars. Heres a dealer in NY. http://www.theexperience.com/services.html#&panel1-1

After I get custom exhaust, from the cats to X-pipe all the way 2.5" piping. I will get the Tune, you can look up forum member Seymor4, he can provide Etunes :dblthumb:

I've had several exhaust set ups in the past couple years with my M... HiFlowCats(HFC's), Megan mids and mufflers, various ypipes, etc... I've also modified my stock mufflers to include larger tips and larger inlet pipes to match up with my 2.5" piping from the Megan setup. Here's a few vids to give you an idea of how quiet running stock exhaust will be if you just run larger piping...keep in mind, I have more mods that add to my overall performance, but when I had the stock mufflers on, I could barely feel any power loss - I was looking to tone down the sound since my son was going to be using my car. The interior sound was just barely louder than stock, but still very quiet compared to the full blown exhaust set up (Megan mufflers, etc). I still have the stock mufflers stored in my garage so I can swap them out if I need to...

If you can find the fujitsubo exhaust system those were only a few db's louder than oem and increased performance. Another way to achieve a quiet exhaust is to have resonators and mufflers that aren't straight through. As to the OP another option to look into is H pipe, nobody has installed one on our platform but that's something else to consider.
