Hi Everyone, I'm looking into purchasing a still Y Pipe for my car for about 300 bucks. I'm getting in a month or so after I get my inspection done because I've heard the Y pipe may complicate things. For whoever has installed a Y pipe I'd like to know what you think. I only heard of a couple good things, as to increase of HP, better sound and maybe get better mpg. Any info would be helpfull thanks

It will be louder, you'll get better HP, your MPG probably won't change much.

And you'll be polluting a little more during the first couple of mins after a cold start

Are there any disadvantages (Exept pollution, thats why i'm not driving an Echo ) ? My car has around 150K miles and i'm hesitant to anything I do to it because it might be a waste of money. I should have done the Y pipe and intake the first year I got my car instead of so late..Thanks

Not really.

Here is the first question you have to ask yourself with ANY car when doing performance mods:

Is the car mechanically sound?

That doesn't apply to your winshield wipers or your power antenna. We're talking about the drivetrain, cooling system, brakes...etc.

If you answered yes to that question, then the likelihood is that your performance mod won't hurt.

If you look at the stock y-pipe, it's far from efficient. Looks like someone glued straws together.

Go to an exhaust shop and have them look at your exhaust. If it's falling apart, then you'll probably want to replace before you do the y-pipe. If, on the other hand, everything looks good, then GO FOR IT!!!

The car so far has been good. For the mileage it runs fine exept the low mpg but I've never done a tune up and the cold weather so I wait until summer to measure it again. I installed a cold air intake with KN filter and loved it so i'm thinking adding a Y pipe would make it more complete. I might buy a stillen Y pipe from my friend. My mechanic has always discouraged me from doing any mods to my car. He believes the car is good by itself. Since now with the high mileage I wanted just to add small performance mods and enjoy them.

I'm hesitatnt to go to an exhaust shop ( Was thinking of Meinike )because I know they will let me know ill need to replace a lot and I don't know if I can trust them. My mechanic will check my exhaust for inspection and if it looks ok to him then i'll just add the Y pipe.

Is the noise a lot louder then stock or just a growl? my intake makes a really nice aggressive sound when it goes 3500 rpm and It can be heard from inside but also outside of the car..

It prolly wont be too much louder since you stil have the stock catback, but youll definitly notice a difference. A ypipe is one of the best bolt ons you can do because thats where all the choking happens. If your gonna keep the car for a long time why not do it?

That was my dilemma. I had a very complicated problem with my car in October and the car would keep cranking. I took it to 2 diff dealers. It was the knock sensor. The first dealer tried it twice and then told me its a wiring problem to the firewall or something but they didn't know where exactly and would charge 100 an hour just to locate it and didn't know how long it take.

After that I have up since I thought my car was fnished. Took it to another dealer for a last try, he tries the knock sensor again with no luck but the second time it worked. Thats when my car went back to normal and started looking to get performance part. I actually would love to keep the car for a couple more years. I really enjoy it still after 7 years!!!!

Yeah it does seem like a simple thing to do to increase performance. However I will go to Meinike and get it installed. My friends said they could be able to do it but if it's a matter for 100 bucks installation I'd rather get a shop. If it's more then that then I'd have to think about it and trust my friends...

Taking it to a shop is a smart move (especially since you're up north). I'm sure the bolts are going to be rusted pretty bad.

yeah I agree with you. My mechanic saw that my flex pipe ( I guess Y pipe ?) on my 1993 Max, was leaking a little but he said the bolts were messed up and so rusted he couldn't even try to take it off and he let it alone. anyone knows how much should I expect just to install a Y pipe?
