Hey people,

The cops are seriously cracking down on people around here. To the point where they're pulling over people with big exhausts, making them pop the hood and then sending them to the smog referee <sp?> if there is anything non-stock under the hood. Because of that, I want to get some sort of setup where I can keep the stock muffler, but have a valve in the exhaust that will just vent out in the atmosphere.

Do any of you have any experience with that sort of thing on a 240, or any car for that matter?

Phase2 sells an exhaust control valve. But watch out for the noise factor.

u mean u want to the stock muffler and have the exhaust flow through it until u open a valve that vents air out unrestrictivly? or do u just want to keep the stock muffler for appearance and have the exhaust routed elsewhere? i suggest using the stock muffler for appearance and hide the real exhaust. then use phase2motortrend's adjustable resonator on the real exhaust that way u look stock and sound stock and when u want to up the HP open the resonator.

And if you really want it, you'll do it no matter how much work it takes.

My friend did that to the corolla he has, and we use as a truck basically. What he did was fab up a flange y-ing off of the exhaust on the straight pipe / test pipe to mate a throttle body too, and ran a throttle cable from a mower up to it :) Worked well for the WTF factor he was looking for till it got stuck open :)

Check that for an easier fix.

there are some exhaust out there that dont look too big yet you still get a pretty decent amount of power from an exhaust. something like this:

Normally I'd think the straight through one would be better...but maybe I'm wrong.

Try going to a muffler shop and getting the most stock exhaust that you can find, and get 3" piping on it. Then get that adjustable valve from Wayne. I heard it on Richards car, who had straight pipes, and it did A LOT. Plus he probably saved a lot of money on gas because the valve wouldn't let him go into boost.

so the valve from phase2 you have to have 2.75" pipes?

yea, says u will have to custom make a testpipe in 70mm (2.75") in order for this to work

For n/a cars wouldnt 2.75" all the way open not be that good for it? because i understand if you drive with the valve almost shut or all the way shut because it will be restrictive like having smaller pipes. But many have said 2 1/2" pipes are the best.

Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. So far that Mr. Gasket piece is the closest to what I envisioned. Though Nils pointed out there are some "subtle" looking aftermarket exhausts, they are still aftermarket exhausts. I'm not cool with anything that looks not stock, simply because not stock attracts attention that I literally can't afford to be attracting.

The Phase2 gadget is kinda neat I guess, but it falls into the same category as not-stock exhausts. All the Phase2 thing does is quiet down a modified exhaust by restricting the exhaust flow.

I want full exhaust flow, preferably something that dumps from a Y-pipe sort of setup.

so basicly ur wanting to weld a full 3" or so catback exhaust to ur stock muffler? cause if u just use the stock muffler as appearance and have it routed somewhere else the exhaust is going to be very loud and ..... Very loud=alot of attention that u can not afford

What I envision is 3 inch down pipe, to the cat, and then the dump pipe behind the cat. I can deal with it being loud. My buddy who is into Supra's mentioned to me that a much of Supra guy's have electronically controlled dump pipes. I can deal with it being loud. I'll just tell the cop that I have an exhaust leak or something. My goal is to keep the car as stock looking as possible.

you could always just buy the exhaust dump from http://www.jcwhitney.com its universal and its like $25. But noise may be a problem.......

there's something called a QTEC quick time electric cutout that u weld onto a y-pipe so that when u hit the switch u can open it anywhere between completly closed and all the way open. kinda pricey though for such a toy. But i guess if u just invested in a 3" downpipe and QTEC toy, u'de spend about as much as u would on a good exhaust anyway.
