I'm coming out of a 96 Pathfinder into a Rogue. When we first laid eyes on the inside of the Rogue we thought it was going to be too small, but its kind of deceptive. We use it primarily to get to the cottage, and our configuration is to put the back seats down and a pet barrier where the cargo cover bar goes across. The dogs are in the area behind the front seats, and our cottage stuff (cooler, battery, electric motor, etc) goes at the very back on the other side of the barrier.
So far, it seems like we have more depth, front to back. The dogs seem to have as much room as before, and now I can put the motor, then the cooler, then the battery one after another (front to back). In the Pathfinder, I could only fit the cooler and the battery; motor would have to go on top. The wheel wells also seem to intrude less on the Rogue.
Where we are giving up some room is in headroom in the back. I don't think I could stack nearly as high as in the Pathfinder. The back also curves in, and the opening for the hatch is quite a bit smaller than the inner width. Not really a problem unless you're trying to get something really wide in.
There is another fairly large area for storage if you're packing her to the gills. Dunno about the Xterra's, but on the Pathfinder the rear bench folded down first, then the seats. On the Rogue, the bench stays fixed and the seats fold down over top. This leaves quite a bit of room in the rear foot wells for storage. We plan to use this space on our upcoming trip to PEI.
