I currently have an 05 XTerra. I like the XTerra but would like better mileage. I'm interested in the Rogue, but I have a few concerns. Is there a big difference in cargo space? I need room in the back for 2 sets of golf clubs and push carts. I also want to be able to put my kayak on top and bike on back. I live in Maine so it needs to be good in the snow. I don't do much off road driving other than my dirt driveway and towing is not an issue for me. I like the looks of the Rogue and I'd love to have the sunroof and premium stereo like I had in my old Pathfinder. I'd love to hear from people who have driven both the XTerra and Rogue or have similar driving and space issues.

I was in a similar situation, as I used to drive a Montero Sport, and I loved the flexibility and cargo space of an SUV.

With that being said, the Rogue does have a decent amount of cargo space for a small crossover, but it is not an SUV like the Xterra.

Now i have never driven an Xterra, but I know it was similar to my old Montero Sport in size.

So going to the Rogue will be a sacrifice in cargo space for you. Its just a sacrifice that goes along with the better gas mileage.

i can't answer much about the cargo space issue, i had a suzuki grand vitara (4wd) before and i have more cargo space now than i did before.

i've seen a lot of people with huge huge cargo/thule/whatever boxes on top though, i'm sure a kayak would be fine, and a bike rack in the hitch would be fine as well.

they drive amazing in the snow. the first time i took her in the snow the roads hadn't been touched after a storm.

i have both and although the cargo space is bigger in the xterra i dont think you will have any problems in the rogue with the seats down.they drive very differently, xterra is more of truck and the rogue handles like a car.my parents were down this weekend and i can tell you that with my wife and my baby the rogue was better for seating. that has to due with the position of the car seat base and the latch system but still the rogue is suprisingly roomy.i only have the fwd rogue but so far it has been very good in the snow and i like in ontario canada (we got dumped on this year).my xterra is the older model SC and sucks gas like CRAZY so the rogue makes a big difference there even though the milage is nowhere near where they say it should be.

i think what you have to answer is what do you like to drive more, truck feeling or car?

I had a 02 x terra and loved it, but that truck loves gas and a lot of it. Just got a brand new Rogue AWD sl. The interior of the Rogue feels bigger, but has less truck space. Dont know how it does in the snow yet, but it handles great on wet pavement, and the drive itself is way better on the highway and around town. It handles more like a car, corners good and is great at high speed. The best of all the gas milage is way better. I usually get 25 mpg on mixed highway and city. I do miss the x terra cause it was like a tank and I really beat it up. But i definately dont miss only getting 260 miles out of a tank of gas. I was unsure about getting the Rogue at first cause my wife sasid it looked too girly. But after we testdrove a black one with black interior, I bought it not caring what she had to say anymore.Jake

To me, the downside of the cargo space in the rogue is how the top of the trunk is swooped in a bit. My forester was more squared, so I could fit just about anything in it. With the back on the rogue the way it is, I find i have to lean things to the side or juggle alot more to get them in ok.

I'm coming out of a 96 Pathfinder into a Rogue. When we first laid eyes on the inside of the Rogue we thought it was going to be too small, but its kind of deceptive. We use it primarily to get to the cottage, and our configuration is to put the back seats down and a pet barrier where the cargo cover bar goes across. The dogs are in the area behind the front seats, and our cottage stuff (cooler, battery, electric motor, etc) goes at the very back on the other side of the barrier.

So far, it seems like we have more depth, front to back. The dogs seem to have as much room as before, and now I can put the motor, then the cooler, then the battery one after another (front to back). In the Pathfinder, I could only fit the cooler and the battery; motor would have to go on top. The wheel wells also seem to intrude less on the Rogue.

Where we are giving up some room is in headroom in the back. I don't think I could stack nearly as high as in the Pathfinder. The back also curves in, and the opening for the hatch is quite a bit smaller than the inner width. Not really a problem unless you're trying to get something really wide in.

There is another fairly large area for storage if you're packing her to the gills. Dunno about the Xterra's, but on the Pathfinder the rear bench folded down first, then the seats. On the Rogue, the bench stays fixed and the seats fold down over top. This leaves quite a bit of room in the rear foot wells for storage. We plan to use this space on our upcoming trip to PEI.

I just traded in my 2006 Xterra for a 2008 SL AWD Rogue. The space it the back is quite a bit smaller than the Rogue. Gas mileage was the only reason we traded for the Rogue. We loved our Xterra but rarely used the 4 wheel drive and never off-roaded. The Rogue fit our needs and gets 10 MPG better than the Xterra. I will add a hitch to the rogue and use a carrier to add hauling space when it is needed.
