He, I;m new here but I'm hoping to get some help from the pros around here. I have a 2004 Xterra supercharged, i recently put the nsimo intake on, but now im thinking about getting a smaller pulley. I found a pretty good website that has them, but i wanted to know if anyone here had any recommendations. Also, would this mess with my ECU or anything or viod my warantee? And just for reference, does anyone know what brand and model the stock supercharger is on the xterra? thanks alot guys. -Dave

Hello!

Welcome to NICO!..

The supercharger on the Xterra is a roots type (if its the same as the Frontier ) I want to say its an Eaton, but will wait until the Pros chime in.

Yes it will void your warranty, but I know a guy with a frontier who been running more aggressive pulley than stock and even races it, at the track with no ill effect (yet as he hasnt done any of the things recommended to make this safer, except for the oil).

The addition of an intercooler and/or a retune ,would probaly help make this option safer.

Consider adding a J&S ultrasafeguard to retard timing ,if you make a big jump in PSI (he's at 11 psi)

Also you <must> ,go to sparkplugs one step colder, prefrably copper ones, if you put on a pulley IMO.

I would also recommend going to an oil one step thicker if you do this, like a 10w-40 or even 20w-50.

Thanks alot, the one I'm looking at only adds 3psi, and I'm not sure how much boost it runs stock, so im not look at THAT much more power. I will definately get the sparkplugs and oil, but I;m not sure if I have the money for an intercooler yet, or where I can fit it in my engine bay. Also, what is the retard timing, and where can I look at intercoolers for an Xterra?

Plz Excuse the typos:

There are probaly cheaper timing boxes out tehre, than the J&S, which is kinda the Mercedes of timing boxes.

MSD makes some for a lot of applications, I wouldnt be surprised if yours is among them.

This is justa s a safety issue, for your engine, luckily you live way out east were the gas is better than in Cali.

Timing change was something I mentioned beca\use if you add psi, you compress the gas/air mix more.Which makes it hotterWhich makes pre-ignitoion more likely ( knock) which of course can destroy engine.,m witha s mild an addtitiona s you desribe , just colder plugs and thicker oil might be enough to run safe if you only gas up premium.

I cant gurantee of course that you will be totally safe, but can only say if it was mine I'd feel safe enough to accept some extra risk and have more fun with the vehivle.

Like I said the other guy I know thats done this on this platform has it at 11 psi and drives it hard.

I am not sure what stock setting is, maybe 6 or 7? ( anyone?) so adding 3 probaly puts you at 9 or 10 psi.

Not chump change but not a huge problem I hope.

I do hope some of our better techies jump in here tho cuz my experince is limited and I can only sy I would acept the rest-risk that exists after precautions, even w/o an intercooler.

So it all depends will you atke the risk..Is it finaced , your only ride, and you are feeding a family and dont have much reserves in $$, then I wouldnt do it as it voids teh powertrain warranty.

Are you single and have extra money to play with, and not worry too much about warranty and just wanna have fun, mixed with some reasonable reliability but are willign to accept a higher maintenance load ( kinda like me) then go ahead

haha yeah its just for fun, I'm only 17 but I'm trying to do alot to this car so when I turn 18 or 19 I can buy a nice small car that I can tune up real good. I don't really pay for anything like gas or insurance so thats not really a problem. Like I said, I have a CAI, and I do only use premium gas, and with spark plugs and oil I'm hoping knock won't be a problem.

Fred was correct on the maker of the SC, as far as stock boost I am not even sure, I dont know if it is even listed in the service manual. That kinda info is usually sales numbers like HP is.

Thanks alot guys, I hopefully have found an intercooler and BOV that will fit my application, I'm emailing the guy from boost designs to see if it will work. I also already found headers and exhaust that seem to work well, and the spark plugs and oil should be a problem, now all I need is the cash.

It might be worth it to go and find out how much you could trade in your 04 to get into an 05'. The 05 has 265 HP and 287 lbs of torque. I think it would be cheaper to just get the newer version and dump this one than to try to get even close to the HP with the 04'.
