I have a 2000 xterra with 125000 miles. It runs well except for a noise when hitting the brake. Pads versus complete brake job. never had timing belt replaced. Do I do this automatically or wait for a signal of sorts?

You should just need new pads. Go for ceramic pads. Also, ask your mechanic about resurfacing your rotors. If he recommends a full brake job (new rotors, calipers, the works) you'll be looking at a considerable expense. Albeit it is one that you could have prevented.

I'm not familiar with the xterra, but it may have a timing chain, in which case you'll never have to mess with it (hopefully). If it's a belt, you should definitely get it changed soon. It's kind of expensive, and they usually replace your water pump at the same time (it's good practice), but it is well worth it. The alternative is a broken timing belt.Remember this equation, it's important:broken timing belts = broken engines.

Also, if you're going to be working on your own car, look into getting an FSM. Read it, use it, love it. It is your new bible.-fuse.

Yeah, I'm thinking its the pads as well. If your saavy enough, check your pad thickness to see how much life you have left.
