I have a 2000 Xterra 4wd XE. The other night I noticed when I start moving I could hear a clicking noise...kind of like a playing card in the spokes of a bike tire. It speeds up as I speed up. I asked a couple people and they though it might be a CV joint, but it doesn't only do it when I make a turn. Any ideas on how serious of a problem it might be and how much it costs to fix?

Hi jim welcome to nico good to have another SUV owner on board..

It sounds like one of your auto locking hubs is stuck engauged. Do a couple things here and see if you can take care of your problem with out buying a hub. First check the tire pressure in both your front tires. make sure their pressures are equal and that the tires are a matched set as well as pretty even tread wear. If all this is ok or after you get it set. put your xterra in 4H and pull forward in a straight line 25ft stop shift it back to 2H and back up 25 to 30 ft in a straight line. See if this resolves your incedent. If it still doesnt you may need a new hub..You may be able to pull it off and reset all its internals and put it back on and that may help. But do the first suggested course of action and see if it will resolve it self.

Good call on the hub. It looks like it ended up being one of the washers in the hub assembly- not sure what its called but it has 5 or 6 teeth on the inside the help engage the 4wd. Two of the teeth had broken off- probably the result of my shifting into 4wd on the road without coming to a stop first- I guess I won't do that again. Anyway, I've got the part on order and getting it fixed this week. Thanks for the help.

you should be able to shift from 2H to 4H and back again on the fly but you must stop to shift into 4L. I think its up to 25 mph not sure could be higher. Let me know if the washer alone is the cause..not sure that alone will cause the clicking. maybe something else in the hub gave way and the washer was only a symptom. look at the hub guts closely make sure they are all in tact and aligned properly.
