I have a 2000 xterra VG3.3 with tight block drain plugs. Any ideas to remove? Do they need to be removed to change water pump? Don't want to twist them off. I also have a coolant leak betwen the upper an lower intake manafolds. What is the best way to reseal?

If you want to change/drain the coolant in the system then open the drain butterfly on the bottom of the radiator and drain it that way. This will remove 90% of the coolant from the system.

And yes you do have to drain the coolant to change a waterpump. If you're in there you might want to consider doing the timing belt (That is if your engine is due. (160,000km/100,000miles is the Manufacturer's requirement)

The name of the part you have your coolant leak is called the intake plennum. If it's leaking coolant you need to remove the intake plennum and maybe the intake manifold and replace the gaskets. There is no real quick fix for that kind of leak.

You can try some sealant that you add to the coolant but these are not for permanent repairs.
