Hi Im new to the forums. I have a Nissan Xterra 2001, 6cylinder truck.

I was wondering if any of you can help me with a problem I am having with the truck. The truck won't start. I can't move the truck back because the wheels are locked in place. I can move the gear to Neutral on my truck, but it won't move backwards, the wheels are locked in place.

I can't roll it forward only because it is in a parking place. I need to roll it backwards so I can put it on a hitch to bring to a mechanic. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get it to unlock and roll it backwards?

Wow this is a weird problem.

I am going to assume this is a 4x4.

If you can get the tranmission into neutral, have you also tried putting the transfer case into the NEUTRAL position as well? This will completely disengage the driveshafts from the transmission. You should be able to move it then.

Also Check to see if your E-brake is fully released. Sometimes the linkage will stick in the locked position and even though the E-Brake lever is released the rear brakes will still be engaged.

This image is your rear brake assembly ( if you have drums that is ). The Crank Lever, in RED, is visible from the back side of the Back Plate, in light blue. Check the crank lever and make sure there is no tension on it. If the E-brake is fully released it should be almost parallel with the back plate . If it's stuck you can lightly tap the Crank Lever back in place with a hammer until tension is released.

Barring that you may end up having to remove the rear drive shaft from the rear differential and securing the shaft with wire or rope for the tow to the shop. If you remove the rear drive shaft completely you will need to cap the tailshaft end of the transmission with a cup or something similar so it doesn't spill oil everywhere. Sometimes a small coffee cup or plastic spray can lid can be used to seal the tail shaft.

Hope this helps.

If you do drop the rear driveshaft and it still won't move, that would narrow it down to an ebrake issue. A friend in a new Tacoma was wheeling with us recently and had this happen. We pulled the wheel and gave the brake drup a few taps with a big hammer and we heard it pop and release.

Otherwise, BigBird's tips should help you out.
