Firaxis (Civilization, Alpha Centauri) is remaking the original X-Com: UFO Defense (known as UFO: Enemy Unknown outside the US). It's going to retain the combo of turn-based strategic combat and management meta-game. It'll feature classes, stat development and persistence for soldiers, agency management, base-building (with 3D exploration of bases possible), and a host of other stuff.

I'm watching this one very, very closely. X-Com is easily a top-3 game for me, alongside Half Life and Diablo II. The sequels got a little less great each time--Terror From the Deep was quite good, but Apocalypse lost some of the charm. After Apocalypse nothing from the X-Com universe was worth bothering with.

I'm watching this one too, not sure if I'll buy it just yet...I'll have to wait and see some of the dev notes and more gameplay before I make a decision. Nice to see them knocking the dust off of the Xcom franchise though.

I can't believe you mentioned Firaxis and didn't say anything about my favourite title from them, Sid Meier's Pirates!. I suppose Microprose did release it first a looooong time ago, but I'll always remember the gold version circa 2005.

I own this, but it keeps crashing on the tutorial.

Don't you worry, the AMD driver guy is hard at work trying to fix these issues.

:rotfl

My experience tells me that the "AMD Driver Guy" is a dead rat in a bowl of formaldehyde next to an unplugged PS/2 keyboard with a missing "G" key.
