E74: I/O Hardware Error - HSIO related, could be crc error, or many things: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. Microsoft covers this error under their 3-year warranty, this is availble to anyone who hasn't modified their console. contact MS to get a free replacement console before attempting to fix this yourself. Failing that this error In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)

E18 (error 0102): Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard. There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.

He can't afford to fix his Xbox so you suggest a PS3?

Any who, OP what ever you do, DO NOT DO ANY RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN.You want to leave this to every one else. 5 mins and I found this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo2dl2vlwis

Watch all three. Enjoy.

Did you have it for longer then 3 years?Edit: Never mind some one already told you. I wouldn't try fixing your xbox on your own, trust me. I had the same issue(e74) when I called up microsoft they said my warrintey was up (it wasn't) so I tried fixing it and I couldn't get it to work, and I bacically did every thing on the internet.

And THIS is why, despite the fact that I own like 40+ pieces of videogame hardware, I've yet to buy an X360.

And I won't buy one, at least not until it's a $100 bargain-bin item years from now.

They need to completely redesign the hardware, a la the PSTwo. Then maybe I'd think about it...MAYBE.

FWIW, I've got a launch 360 pro/premium that is still completely functional. I've also got a few month old elite. Never once gotten a RRoD on either.

My roommate bought my 2nd run Pro 360 and I've had a 1st run elite for the last couple of years and neither one of the them has had the RROD or any other problem.

That appears to be in the works. Spy shots of what appear to be a 360 slim motherboard have popped up. The design repackages the gpu and cpu and should solve the heat problems (this isn't some minor heatsink alteration, but a complete redesign with the CPU and GPU sharing a heat sink).

The firmware update coming up further suggests a redesign. Normal run of the mill attached storage (like flash drives) will be able to be used for full read-write storage for up to 2x 16gb partitions. Seems like a major enough thing that it would accompany a redesigned console.
