I would think the design is flawed a little as well...instead of sitting sideways like a PS2 it is flat against the groung...making it more susceptible to dust and such.
My Xbox had only one DDE prior to this and had otherwise been flawless. It's kept free of dirt/dust and is never moved around.
It was fine for 8 months until yesterday.
It seems there was a bad batch of DVD drives in the first generation or two of Xbox(Xboxes? Xboxen?), if the Internet rumors are to be believed. Early drives were supplied by Thomson (a division of RCA, I think) while later drives are Samsung and possibly Phillips.
For one reason or another, MS is no longer using drives supplied by Thomson and there do seem to be more failures on the early Xboxen.
At any rate, thanks for all of your suggestions.
I had forgotten that I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy, so at least I can get another Xbox without spending any extra $$$. I'll buy a Memory Card, which will let me transfer everything important except for my Knights of the Old Republic save games.
BTW, it seems that the Xbox Live dashboard has been updated! It looks pretty cool, and I think you can voice chat with someone without actually being in a game now.
