It appears that my beloved XBox has given up the ghost. Any fellow 'Box owners know of the dreaded DDE (Dirty Disk Error). It was fine yesterday, but this evening it refuses to play anything I own.

Here's the real kick in the ***...if I return the thing under extended warranty from Best Buy I'll lose all my stuff saved on the harddrive, including 20+ hours of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, all my Halo save games and my Sega GT 2002 games!

I don't think I really want another Xbox, nor do I want the PS2 or Cube. Anyone know when PS3 is coming out?

I 'spose this was a rant. I have no particular point to make. Just pissed off!

I'd buy a PS2, but I don't really care for the technology. The lack of a harddrive really hurts, online capability doesn't seem quite on par with Xbox Live, graphics aren't as good as Xbox...

I'll probably wait for PS3 and see how that looks. I went years without a console before the Xbox, and I can do it again (last one before my Xbox was an old PS1).

My ancient PS1 is now in my brother's posession and still going strong, as is his PS2. My Xbox lasted all of 8 months. :(

Yeah, having no hard drive sucks. I always loved bustin' out Amped and being able to switch between my own fav songs loaded on the hard drive. I did buy my Xbox the first week it was out, so they might've fixed that prob by now...

Reminds me of the time when I opened a Xmas present and there was an original Game Boy (old-skool Fat Boy=first system I had) and Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening... Man, those where the days :) PS3 can't compete with that experience...

I appreciate the sentiment. My Intellimouse Explorer took a **** a few weeks ago too. Coincidence? I think not!

As for PS3, I figured that PS2 would be around at least through 2004. Isn't GT4 supposed to be released in '04?

i believe you can transfer your save data from the HD onto a memory card in the xbox memory menu, then you can do whatever from there.

yeah, GT4 is scheduled for 2004. i'd guess spring/Japan autumn/USA.

i think new PS2 games will be made until about 2007, maybe even longer than that, because PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS2 (like PS2 was with PS1)

You can definitely do that. And once you get your XBOX replaced put a chip in it so you won't have to use the dvd-rom that often.

It isnt hard to fix. If it is under warranty...get a memory card..transfer your data and take the memory card back once the data is transfered to your new XBOX. Mine just crapped out. I took it apart and tried to repair it. i got CD's to work, but I think the laser/lens is too far gone to be repaired. So I am going to trade in my GC and put some cash down on a new XBOX. i was going to wait, but not playing unreal tournament and ghost recon on XBOX live is killing me. Plus when Fable (project EGO) comes out, I will have to play it. Plus I was pretty far on Morrowind too. Damn XBox. I have no luck with these things. i have had 3 PS2's and now I have to get another XBox

it'll probably quit now.....I'm wanting to say that's like a 120 dollar fix or something lame like that, better off to just buy a new one

I'm still waiting for them to make a new console that has the durability of the old square NES, man I've beatin the living crap out of mine, my first one met it's fate at the hands of a glass of milk though:(

I would give up cars before I gave up consoles!!! Cars are fun but not as important as video games to me..LOL. I buy all the new systems soon after they come out (except PS2..It took me awhile to get one). I probably have liek 80 games between my PS2, Xbox and Gamecube and Gamboy Advance

You must live in a dusty area...*shrug*...I've had mine over a year now without a single problem.

I would think the design is flawed a little as well...instead of sitting sideways like a PS2 it is flat against the groung...making it more susceptible to dust and such.

why not take the harddrive out of the Xbox and move the data to your harddrive in your computer.. then go return it, and do the same thing to the new xbox just put the data back on it.. im shure the harddrive is IDE.. or just network it to your computer and transfer the data to your harddrive that way.. im shure there are programs to do that.. i know my friend could load games to his xbox thru his network.. tho u might need a mod chip =\

damn, If I stopped to think of all teh money I've wasted on videogames..... and cars... I'd be rich! lets see, I've owned everything ecer produced by sega (master system master system 3D glasses, those were a TRIP!, genesis, cd, 32x, saturn, dreamcast, gamegear, gamegear/master converter) everything ever produced by atari (2600, 5200, 7800, lynx, jaguar, jaguar cd), a TG16, and a PS one to boot! never owned a nintendo system. the orange brown and greeen graphix of teh early NES turned me off. well that and when they got busted for stealing Shinobi and tetris.

I am gonna get an Xbox soon and probably a PS2 (if only for GT and GTA series games) hopefully, they will have the dirty disc eror fixed by then.,

My Xbox had only one DDE prior to this and had otherwise been flawless. It's kept free of dirt/dust and is never moved around.

It was fine for 8 months until yesterday.

It seems there was a bad batch of DVD drives in the first generation or two of Xbox(Xboxes? Xboxen?), if the Internet rumors are to be believed. Early drives were supplied by Thomson (a division of RCA, I think) while later drives are Samsung and possibly Phillips.

For one reason or another, MS is no longer using drives supplied by Thomson and there do seem to be more failures on the early Xboxen.

At any rate, thanks for all of your suggestions.

I had forgotten that I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy, so at least I can get another Xbox without spending any extra $$$. I'll buy a Memory Card, which will let me transfer everything important except for my Knights of the Old Republic save games.

BTW, it seems that the Xbox Live dashboard has been updated! It looks pretty cool, and I think you can voice chat with someone without actually being in a game now.

hah serious man.. how bout the trick where u stick the game just to the point where it has to rub against the console as u press it down. that old POS nintendo has the most problems out of any of em.. now the SNES.. there was a solid system.

SOLUTION TO THE DIRTY DISK THINGY:

Boil hot water, when its boiling, turn off the fire and dip the CD inside the water for just a second, it works for me and works FINE everytime after that.
