Coming from someone who used Minidisc before getting a car, I'll tell you to stay away from Sony. :-) Their car stuff is mostly junk, poorly made, and deficent in sound quality (that $699 model that you referenced only has a CD S/N ratio of 90 db; some home cassette decks could almost match that with Dolby S).
I would personally recommened either an Eclipse or Alpine units. I made the choice to get an Alpine CDA-7894 a little over a year ago, as opposed to getting a Sony unit that would play all my MD's, and I have never regretted it. The quality, look, and feel is immaculate, and not as flashy as the majority of Sony or Kenwood head units, which is what I was going for as well.
And for the money that that Sony unit costs, you could get an Alpine CDA-9815 (great model, Bass Engine Pro, 3 sets of 4 volt preamp outs, and V-Drive amplification if you're not planning on going with an amplifier, though you could for the money you'd be saving). Or if you just like the nice displays, Alpine has 2 models with large fold-out faceplates, the CDA-7898, and the CDA-7998 (the CDA-7998 doesn't have any internal amplification though). Ecilpse units will be higher in price compared to the features that you get with the unit, and aren't even as flashy as the Alpines, for the most part, but some people do believe they're higher quality. Hope that helps you out . . .
EDIT: Kenwood and Panasonic aren't bad names either, though I still have a preference for Alpine and Eclipse. :-)
