Sony is a definite no but Kenwood is pretty good.

If you're looking for style with a lot of features, get a Panasonic CQ-HX1083U touch screen deck.

Retail price is $350 but you can easily get them for $200 on eBay.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...50560

Yes, Alpine kicks all butt. sony < kenwood, but alpine and eclipse are very good decks. Either of those two, you won't regret getting them. I've personally got Alpine, it was costly but I love that deck. Then again I also see many of those rappers have their cars tricked out with Alpine audio so might want to give it a shot based upon that. LOL.

Coming from someone who used Minidisc before getting a car, I'll tell you to stay away from Sony. :-) Their car stuff is mostly junk, poorly made, and deficent in sound quality (that $699 model that you referenced only has a CD S/N ratio of 90 db; some home cassette decks could almost match that with Dolby S).

I would personally recommened either an Eclipse or Alpine units. I made the choice to get an Alpine CDA-7894 a little over a year ago, as opposed to getting a Sony unit that would play all my MD's, and I have never regretted it. The quality, look, and feel is immaculate, and not as flashy as the majority of Sony or Kenwood head units, which is what I was going for as well.

And for the money that that Sony unit costs, you could get an Alpine CDA-9815 (great model, Bass Engine Pro, 3 sets of 4 volt preamp outs, and V-Drive amplification if you're not planning on going with an amplifier, though you could for the money you'd be saving). Or if you just like the nice displays, Alpine has 2 models with large fold-out faceplates, the CDA-7898, and the CDA-7998 (the CDA-7998 doesn't have any internal amplification though). Ecilpse units will be higher in price compared to the features that you get with the unit, and aren't even as flashy as the Alpines, for the most part, but some people do believe they're higher quality. Hope that helps you out . . .

EDIT: Kenwood and Panasonic aren't bad names either, though I still have a preference for Alpine and Eclipse. :-)

Of the 3 you listed, I'd say go with the Kenwood.

But if you're open to "others", look at Pioneer Premier, Nakamichi ($$$) or Apline.

Do you still do anything with the MD's? Did you ever have an in-car player? I'm using a cassette adapter :(, b/c I'm not sure I want to replace the Bise HU in my Q.

Yeah, I still have one of their NetMD portable players that hooks up to the computer, and downloads music at 16x speed in MDLP2 mode (they made it so you can fit more music on a single MD, if you haven't seen them in a while). My dad had an in-car player at one point, and I probably would have just used that, but it didn't support any of the MDLP modes, and the Sony player that would do them was $350, and wasn't anything great. Long story short, I got the Alpine because of the better quality, and the ability to play MP3s, which sort of negates me ever getting the MD player for anything but using it when I'm not driving (studying for exams, etc). MD still is pretty neat stuff, and Sony is still doing quite a bit with it, but on the car front, it was just too "cheap". Oh, and FWIW, Bose actually had in-car stereos with MD players builtin, and I've personally seen them in Caddies, though I don't know if it was ever offered in any Nissan . . . might be worth a try if you could find it. :-)
