I have a '89 Fastback with a Shortshifter.... now my problem is... err actually i HAVE asked before and gotten the answer but the question again is, why is my first gear so hard to get in to and all other gears? first gear is the worst, i have to basically jam it up, and why does it grind so much even when i try to shift with the clutch to the floor....

2nd question is.... when i was driving for a long time today... i noticed that the fluid from the shifter was on top of my leather boot on the shifter? wth? is it leaking or what? and my clutch was super hot... what do you guys think is the problem?

1st question - 1st gear has no synchro.

2nd - I dont know, never had a problem of fluid coming out from the top of the transmission. Check to see if it is in their securly I guess.

I dont think the clutch wuold be going, especially if it doesnt slip. 1st gear not having the syncho would prevent you from putting it their while moving, unless your going slow or double(triple :D) clutch.

Do you both rings in your shifter? Do the gaps in them line up? Dont know if that is right, but could be a possiblity. Your master cylinder going would not cause your clutch fluid to be on the leather of your shifter.

see the thing is... if i'm moving like 10mph or whatever in 2nd gear i CAN get it to 1st gear smoothly, only problem is when im at a dead stop its a ***** to put it to first. and i thought that if the master cylinder going bad would cause for me shifting harder.... anyone else have any idea? everytime i take it to a mechanic, they are always saying that its the clutch thats bad..... which i think is not

Mines horrible to put in first at a dead stop. Sometimes I push it with everything I have, and it still won't go in. But I release the clutch and push it back in and voila, into first gear w/o a problem. Dunno what that means though. It doesn't matter cuz I'm replacing most of my manual transmission stuff (god knows how many teeth the gears are missing...thank god I've only ground once and thats because my 3rd gear synchros are going bad)

My Sentra does the same thing ... 1st and Reverse ... just double or triple clutch it, and its fine, this basically syncs it manually, if u understand that, since 1st has no syncros.
