I just called to see about another spare key for my V.(the one with the chip in it) The dealer told me $25 to cut a key and $80 to program it to my car!!

$105 + tax ect... WTF

Does this sound right? Seems awful high to me.

better than lexus. i work in a lexus parts department and replacement keys on ANY newer model are over $200 plus programming fee. 105 total aint bad at all for an 07 car.

Just buy a regular aftermarket key for a backup, costs around $1.50. Don't have the Versa yet, but from what the salesman told me when I did the test drive, you can still open and crank the car normally in case the batteries in your fob are dead (there's a regular key inside). If it's just going to be a spare or to give to the mechanic while servicing, why pay that much?

Thats sort of what I have.. I have a spare key that isnt programmed, they gave it to me for free at my request. I can't use it in the ignition, but It's fine for opening the doors up.

It was 30 for the key and 30 for programing for me. Canadian prices. 100 bucks is too much.

The regular key should work in the ignition. The top on the ignition knob is actually a spring loaded flap that hides a keyhole underneath. When I was doing the test drive, the salesperson kept the key in his pocket and I poked in the flap expecting to find a button to start it, but there was just a regular keyhole.

If your key doesn't work in the ignition, I suspect they didn't grind it correctly. I've had cases where I bought a spare key and only had it work in the doors but not the ignition and I've always just gotten another key and it worked. My mom's key for her van works for the front doors, ignition, and back door, but not for the side door. I told her to get another key, but she never uses the side door so she figured it wasn't worth the bother.

Spare keys will physically turn the cylinder but not turn on the car. What they mean by "programming" is that there is a chip embedded inside the key that has to be programmed to match the BCM on the car. If the car sees the cylinder getting turned but doesn't see a matching key, it does not start. It is called an immobilizer.

Wasn't sure if the regular keys had chips in them or not. Good to know, anyway.
