So apparently I have to take my drivers test again in order to get an Oregon drivers license. What the hell is this about? I'm 33 years old, I've been driving for 17 years and I have to take a test to transfer my license? This is just stupid.

Oh, and I also have to take my 2014 Mazda Miata with 5,200 miles, most of which were getting here, for a emissions and 'vin inspection' in order to get my plates.

I never thought I'd say this, but this is worse than New York.

I think I can sum it up in one word....WAH! (j/k)

Many states require both emissions and vehicle inspection. I'm guessing you were lucky to live previously in a state that didn't require 'em. You should be thankful you don't live in Pennsylvania where both tests are required (in the densely populated counties) and done by private stations who charge fees for both the tests (pass or fail) and then the stickers regardless of the vehicle's age/mileage.

As far as the drivers license, according to DMV.org for Oregon,if I read it right, it appears you only have to pass a simple written exam. There's no road test. So, if you've been driving for 17 yrs, I would think I would be a minor inconvenience to take it, well, unless you take it drunk and flunk. Methinks If you viewed the glass half full, you'd also see that once you transfer that drivers license to Oregon, you won't have to renew it for 8 yrs. That ain't bad.

NYS requires a independent inspection at a state certified private garage as well, but they do not require emissions tests on cars that are less than 2 years old. Even NYS isn't that anal.

And you hit the nail on the head about the written test. Who is going to fail that? It's not like I'm immigrating from Honduras. I'm coming from Tennessee. It seems to me like a pointless hoop to jump through and waste of resources.

Agreed.

I have to take it again to get my Idaho DL. The study guide for it has a huge, long section about roundabouts. Everyone else in the state should have taken it, too (they should have drivers' licenses, right??) and yet they still have no idea what to do with the damn things. I'm struggling to see the benefits of written driving tests in their current form for existing license-holders. It's just added expense and time for both driver and municipality.

Roundabouts-
Those are those circular chicanes that you use to test how close you can clip those apexes without slowing, right?

Interesting! :yesnod

I have some phone camera pictures (not high quality) of an old Datsun truck that I took at Infiniti HQ in Japan some time back. Unfortunately, they didn't want me taking pictures apparently, so asked me to stop. So I am note sure if I should post those here or not ... will see if I can get permission. :)

This is something that the West Coast has over the northeast. Old International Harvester trucks not overcome by rust. Love those old beasts.

Missouri is the same way (in large population centers like STL) except for making you retake the test.

It's no wonder people hang on to their old licenses years after moving. I have a friend I've known for years with a Michigan plate. Tons of Missourians with vacation property in Florida drive around with FL plates.

If you make it a pain, people will find a way around.

Japan will transfer my stateside license with just a written test. Lucky because that whole do the course with my hand taped to the wheel and a cup of water on the dash looks brutal!

Wish I had my motorcycle endorsement. I have to go through their grinder on that one.
