I have a 01 I30 and when i start the car it idles fine at around 1500. Once it warms up it starts to Idle Jump up and down from 1500 to 2500. When i am driving it and come to a light, I feel the car trying to push when I am trying to slow down, so I put it in neutral and let the rpms jump around until it is green and then drop it back in drive. It has a check engine code of p505. It says it needs a Idle control valve. My question is can i clean it before I have to replace it, or is this somehting you just have to replace. Also Would I be better off getting a used throttle body complete and puting that it since it would be cheaper. And lastly suposedly it needs to be programed at the dealer once I replace it. Is this true, or code I just unplug the battery and let the computer reset its self. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Funny thing about these cars, one code refers to several parts problems... I would start with cleaning off the MAF sensor, I know there are several references here for that as far as the steps to take. One other problem may be the throttle position sensor, but I would start at the MAF sensor and go from there.

Assuming the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) is as easy to remove as the one on the 4th gens, I would remove it and clean it out with throttle body or MAF cleaner.

Clean your MAF like Mike said and then go to Autozone and borrow their code reader and erase the code (also check for other codes).

Drive it around and see if that fixes your problem.

You might also want to check the vacuum hoses for pinches or clogs.

Idle Air Control valve is not attached to the throttle body, from what I can tell. It's replacement books out at a .5 hour job. I would obtain a copy of the shop manual associated with your vehicle, it comes in pretty handy (or stop by your favorite parts store and window shop their manuals). I believe this is located under the throttle body, has a few hoses running to it and is about as big as half your fist. Check for hose blockage, and if it's not to costly, replace it.

You should be able to adjust your iacv also. I would try that also.
