I have a similar problem. My gauge cluster doesn't illuminate when you turn the headlights on. I tried swapping in a digital cluster one day, and the digital cluster illuminuated, so it leads me to believe there is a bad ground in the original sub harness that connects the cluster to the main harness.

Just a guess though. Haven't gotten my hands on a replacement sub harness to test my theory.

I'm not sure how it is in a S14...In my S13, there's a sub harness that's right behind the cluster, that connects the cluster to the main harness. In the S13, it's a little over a foot long, and it can disconnect from either the cluster and the main harness-it's modular. I imagine the S14 is a similar setup.

[On the S13 at least], the illumination for the cluster is controlled by the TCU(timing control unit), little white box under the D/S fuse box. The wires are easier to get to there than on the harness. There's a testing procedure in the FSM. If that's OK, just check that those signals are getting to the rear cluster connector. It's pretty unlikely that you have an open or a short in the harness itself. Also don't rule out bulbs. :-)
