I would save all the stuff you want onto disks, then put in the shiny xp cd, follow the directions for reformating and have fun. Generally when computers mess up it's a couple things

M$ is crapyou have some good virii, adware/spyware that is screwing you computer upsomeone else changed something on your computer to screw it up.

Goto download.com and get ad aware as well, it's free and checks for stuff a different way, make sure to update first tho, since it adds about 9000 different things it checks for, also click on run in the start menu, type in "msconfig" then click on the tab that says "startup" that lists all the programs that start whenever your computer boots up, now if you have any trojans/virus's/adware/spyware it would generally show up here, a check means it loads when the computer loads, w/o a check means it doesn't load.

also hit ctrl + alt + delete at the same time and goto processes. Generally there should be anywhere from 30-40 processes running at one time, if you have somewhere close to 60, then you have a ton of spyware/virus's etc. Just hit me up on AIM (reddragon hcivic) if you need any more pointers.
