I guess there were 3 different kinds. The 4 port they got in Europe, the 8 port we're used to, and then this 8 port, which I guess is the 1st gen 8 port...

1st gen 8 port head and intake manifold 4 port head2nd gen 8 port head

I'm guessing thats the pre S13 (i.e. S12) CA18DET we've heard of but rarely seen. edit: no, that looks like a FWD transmission? I htink there was a different CA on the late S12 tho that was DOHC, but not entirely sure it had a different manifold / head entirely.

That "1st Gen" CA manifold looks like the front wheel drive CAs that came in the Pulsar SE. And whats up with the intake runners on the head the sub-manifold? You see how one runner is all oblong and shaped weird?! Hmm where did you find this info and why hasnt there been more light shed on this? Do our 4-port brothers know much about these different heads. Cool find non the less!

that first one looks like it was dropped on its head when it was a child, and that four port one looks like sex.

This was covered a long time ago, but some people just did pay attention. I warned a certain individual that the head on the 1st gen CA was different, but what in the hell do I know .

PS: Though the intake manifold design is similar to that of the Pulsar SE, it is not the same by all means. The pulsar's intake manifold runners are the exact same as the RWD/AWD's intake manifold runners whereas the 1st gen CA's intake manifold sports individual runners per port. As stated before, this whole set-up is a big headache and one should just avoid this at all costs. The only useable part of these engines are the bottom ends and they even a have a different grade of pistons.

I wish I had a picture for you at the time, but since I've torn a couple of those things apart, it makes me sick thinking about them (They suck).

I'm still trying to figure out how they work internally. It's almost like it's a 3 piece manifold....

unworthy of boat anchor duty. i would think te long runners are fro extra low end torque... whydoes it have butterfly valves on every one of the ports? its got those crazy double ports on four runners that dont seem to be obstructed by those valves though... its gotta make absolutely no power unless those things are open. i want to know what the guys at nissan were smoking when they came up with this one.

So all the FWD/AWD had the 8-port butterfly heads? reason I ask is I'm getting ready to buy an AWD CA18DET...:

AS long as the motor has an AWD transmission on it, then it should be a more modern CA. FWD CA18 engine are ones you need to watch out for because the FWD units look like the one in the previous post.

I like the 8 port with the actuated butterfly valves via the "power valve". It provides a good way of provideing more useable torque down low and can have a big affect on the power curve. Its a better design than the old school unit. It probably doesnt flow as much at higher rpms like the 4 port head/manifold but its definately been proven worth keeping. I'll be using this setup so it'll be good to see what kind of results i get.

Whats up with that testing you wanted to do on the 4 and 8 port heads Ryan?

I recently ordered the two check valves, solenoid, and vacuum tank. What pin on the JDM ecu connects to the Power Valve Solenoid? This is all i need left to get my NICS running correctly!

Nevermind, i found it!

- Solenoid is ground switched by ECU, pin 8 on the ECU. This means one wire to pin 8 on ECU and one to power (12V).

woot! someone actually did something for me! victory!!!

im curious as to how the butterfly valves restrict air flow when you have the thing bent over. i removed everything associated with mine (rod, plates, etc.) and it seems to have made a good bit of difference at say, 7-8k. i upgraded the intake cam slightly when i did it so im not sure how much the headwork did for me, but i swear it did something.

I do know that Ryan is waiting on my super slow a-- to get him an intake mani gasket. I suck, sorry Ryan. My s13 has sat so long due to this house that when I finally went to drive it the damn brakes were stuck .

Hey R34 I have another 4 port

I've got the 4 port head here, but as Jason said, I'm waiting on his pokey azz to get me a gasket.

I also had UPS lose the first 8 port head I got, so now I've got to source another one and come up with the money. UPS only gave me $100 for the damn thing...

by what time are you looking to get an 8 port head??? I have one of those too but was going to play with it a little bit along with this fwd intake mani I got. As i have stated though I bought a pretty big German house and am having to do all the remodeling myself so all my car projects have taken, I would say back seat, but actually more like the trunk. So I might be willing to part with it to fund some other stuff and just keep the other 4 port I have.

Again I suck I know, please forgive me

HA you have to forgive my pokey azz now. The gasket should be here next week sometime. I put all my crazy german skills to use finally and ordered a few of them. This one is on me Ryan since it took me so long. Send me an email with your address again and as soon as I get it in i will send it your way. I don't know anything of the quality though but since I know now what the stupid part in German is called it won't be that hard to track down again.
