I was just curious if anyone would switch their current Pathfinder for a 4runner of similar year. I've noticed that the 4runners have better resale value and have been known to have great reliability maybe better than the Pathfinder? This is not to say Pathfinders aren't reliable, the reviews I've read on various sites (Edmunds, Kelly BB etc.) on R50's seem to be great.

Does anyone own one and can give feedback as to how the two fare against each other (stock for stock)? Things like ergonomics, ride, mpg, the way the vehicle drives/handles, power, etc.

a buddy of mine used to own one. To be honest, the only selling point for me would be the hatch glass that goes down. Other then that I've grown quite fond of the R50's design handling power and appearance. From what i know the R50's have more power... 4 runner IMO looks "tall" ? I dont know.. personal preference.

I originally shopped for one seeing as i grew up sitting in the back seat of one... i believe cargo room 4runner wins. and again.. the only thing that sells for me would be the dropdown hatch glass

Absolutely I would.. And i'm sure many others feel the same way.. Actually before getting my pathfinder, I was looking for a 4runner, but they are more expensive and therefore I could not afford one... That is the reason I went with the second best..

Also , just for the sake of having front coilovers instead of mcphersen type shock in the front and also tons of aftermarket parts is enough for me to want one..

If I had the money, no hesitation.... but don't get me wrong, I'm keeping my pathy now.. I love this machine..

Ha! Yeah, I would repeat what the others have said as well. The 4Runner looks bigger and more rugged as well. I've seen many with 300k+ kms sell for over six grand!

I guess you could lump me in with the rest of everyone. The sliding rear glass was also a selling point for me but when I saw 4runners of the same year for $2,000-$3,000 more and with more mileage I decided to go with the pathfinder. As for looks, I've always liked both although I agree the 4runner looks a bit taller and maybe a bit narrower as well.

If I ever do decide to sell the pathfinder I may seriously consider a 4runner but in a 4WD 5-speed manual setup.

I guess I'm the only one who wouldn't trade the Pathy for the 4runner. I've only been In one (early 00's 4runner) once and even with leather and all options the interior is just cheap and dated looking. And the outside just reminds me of a cow; ugly. Also its not nearly as powerful with 183 hp and 217 torques (just looking at specs). I get compliments alot about the Pathfinder, so I'm more than happy with what I have now.

Why do you guys like the drop down hatch glass? I think the Suburbans from the 80's had those too, I always thought it was just a gimick.

to me its cuz i have a dog... and sometimes when people come up behind you and do stupid s***...you want to roll the window down and show that you have a big pitbull in the back... they generally stop what their doing and drive normally after.

I've actually come to like the hatch glass, especially when camping when I keep my coolers in the back. Unlock the glass, then close it so it doesn't lock. Every time I need something, just flip it open and grab what I need, and close it gently so bugs / rain / leaves stay out. Quick and easy. I imagine with the 4runner hatch glass you (a) need keys and (b) have to wait for the motor to open/close.

Like many, my top 2 choices were the 4runner and Pathfinder. Reviews for both were amazing, but the R50s were selling for less and had less kms.

i wouldn't. i'm a diehard Nissan lover. if i wanted something more "rugged", i would've gotten the Xterra. the Pathys are more like the "luxury" SUVs now.

Nissans have always treated me well and the resale value doesn't really matter to me much because i don't plan on selling it. not a big deal to me. plus, with all the Toyotas that i've worked on in the Tire Center, i've really come to dislike all Toyota wheels. they all balance like crap and they piss me off to no end. that's not the main reason i've come to dislike them, but it doesn't hurt either. haha.

Actually, now that you bring up the Xterra. That would def be another consideration. I remember sitting in one, it was like theater seating, the rear seats were a bit higher then the fronts.

Pre-2001 Pathfinder I would look at the 4runner, the 3.4 V6 is better than the 3.3 from the ones I've driven. My friend has a 2001 4runner V6 4wd sport edition, its nice and he definitely has room for big tires, but overall my 2001 QX4 is a much nicer rig, and gets me where I need to go (nothing crazy off road, no Rubicon)

give me a choice between my QX4 and a 4runner, and I'd stay with my QX

if i hadn't found my current pathy, i was heavily considering getting an '05-newer Xterra. i didn't want the VG33 R50 because i really wanted the VQ35 engine. the VQ35 is one of the best engines that Nissan has made and ranked as 10 best for several years. i've always had love for the older VG engines (i used to own a N/A Z32 and plan to get Z32 TT sometime down the road), but was definitely disappointed at the power that the VG33 made, stock. that's why if i couldn't find a VQ pathy, i planned to get an '05-newer Xterra since it carried the VQ40 and had the power that i was looking for.

I was looking to buy a 2003 4Runner prior to picking up the pathfinder. They was a 6k difference in price between an 2001 pathfinder and 2002 4Runner. I just save the my money and get the 2001 pathfinder. Great Vehicle.

Yeah, I'm still pretty shocked at the price difference between the two vehicles. Even 4runners of the same year having 50,000-75,000 more miles they still command a premium over the Pathfinders.

Still happy with my purchase though, saved saved about $3,000 over a 4runner that had 180,000 vs. my pathfinder that had 107,000.

I do really like the way the 4runners look on the outside, and the aftermarket support they have. But the QX4 is miles ahead on the inside. I'm big on the luxury tip, so the QX4 was the natural choice. Maybe if Toyota decided to make a Lexus version of the 4runner I would have opted for that, but my badge snobbery got the best of me lol.
