Here's my situation: I really dont have anywhere or any time to change my oil... but at the same time Im sort of scared of taking my car to get its oil changed at some random place. I mean will the guys even know what filter to use, or what oil to use or anything? Or can I just go there and tell them what to do and hope they do the job?

You don't have even 20 minutes you can spend doing it?

Theres no where for me to do it. I live in an apartment building and the garage is really funky so that I cant do it there. And the closest garage that I have access to is 45 minutes away from me which would make the 20 minute job into a two hour job...

Hell no! Have your car worked on by someone who knows what is up. Most of the guys in those quick oil-lube places have no idea what the hell is up.

Just remember a few things whenever you have anyone do any work on your car:1) They probably don't give a crap about your car.2) If it isn't obvious when you pick your car up, they will never tell you if they screwed something up or give you a discount because of it.3) They have incentives to finish your car as soon as possible.

I now do all the work on my cars (and own a gripload of tools) mostly because I have had too many bad experiences at shops employing wrench-wielding idiots who have to chant "righty-tighty, lefty-loosy" as they work. I honestly don't think I can trust anyone around here, execept *maybe* a dealership, but $100/hr just doesn't sit well next to all my other bills.

Come on! All you need is a curb (or a ditch).

Where is the spirit of getto-rig these days?

unless your car is lowered you don't even need a jack... Just get up early one mroning and do it before you take a shower. The filter should come off with your hand and the plug is 14mm. All you need is one tool, a catch can, and new oil and a filter. It doesn't take long to do and you get to learn about the car in the process (how does the oil look exc)

You won't even make a mess if you have the catch pan under the car the whole time.

WalMart: $30 for a full-synthetic change with Mobil 1, AND you can stand there and watch them.

Can't beat that... The oil alone is $22...

NO, do NOT trust quick oil change places. They're usually a bunch of underpaid morons who don't make enough to care about that job.

I worked at a walmart tire and lube center and i've seen it all. Problems from underfilling/overfilling, not tightening the oil filter and having oil spill all the way down the road, not tightening the drain plug enough and having the engine blow up later, over tightening the drain plug and stripping the threads on your oil pan. These guys don't care enough to do a good job.

That plus the fact that you have an unknown engine to them. And most of them don't take the time to fill the oil filter up with oil before putting it on like they're supposed to on turbo engines. Oil changing is easy enough to do on your own and not worth risking at a cheap oil place.

So I ended up finding some time and doing it in the parking lot of my the shop that my friend works at.

Side not: WTF was Nissan thinking when they placed the oil filter?!?!?! WE had to use to extensions and a pivot extension to be able to reach the filter with an oil wrench. Then of course it leaked all over the place when we took it out.

You're not supposed to have to use an oil filter wrench...a sign the filter is probably on too tight. Just one more reason to DIY every time. Should be in the FSM, but I think you just turn the filter till the seal contacts the housing, and then go another 2/3 turn or so. Don't forget to apply oil all around the rubber seal beforehand.

Yeah I did all that, but I guess the guy that did my swap over tightened it, three people tried and none of us could even budge it. I hand tightened it back and put oil and all that stuff.

Still a retarded place to put that filter :D

You should try changing a Q45 oil filter sometime.
