I want to do this on a stock KA24DE, yes I know the first pic is an SR20DET, but the angle of the pic is what matters. Basically the maf would be right up on the throttle body or about an inch away. I will also use breathers to cap off the various lines running from the intake tube.

I want to do this

Using these parts

Now keep in mind I will be bolting this right up to a stock KA, will the ECU read the MAF alright or will I run into problems?

Hmmmm. Everything looks like it would work, i would think so anyway. Who knows, you may have stumbled on to something here.

Actually you aren't the first person to come up with this idea. I've seen it before and if I can find the pics I will post them! Yes it will work it's just take some modifcation on your part but it's very achievable!

Why...on earth....would you want to pull air from right behind the radiator?

Good thing you mentioned that, I just realized that, ugh, maybe this isn't such a good idea. Would such a short and direct route outweigh the hot air? Or what about a heat shield? Or could I fit the air filter in front of the clutch fan?

If your talking about the one on 240sx.org, that can be found here http://www.240sx.org/links/ins...x.htm , thats where I got the idea. Accept this will be for an S13 (fuse block where battery could sit on the right) and I'm doing this on the cheap and do not want to relocate the battery to the hatch.

This one?

240's have enough problems with their mafs....relocating it to a spot in the engine that (during idle and/or sitting in slow traffic) could be a huge difference in temperature is surely going to cause more problems.

Not to mention hotter air burns faster and increases chances of detonating as well as robs power due to less air density.

If you were able to locate the filter to just the side of the radiator you should be fine.... but directly behind it is NOT a good idea.

I guess this won't be practical and cost effective, and I do not want to relocate the battery to the trunk.

yeah, unfortunately I just don't think it'll work.

If you're looking to go on the cheap though just get ebay special intakes....but ditch the filters...they are no good.

Ok I'm back! I guess you are deciding against it but here are the pics anyway! Yes you will probably have to relocate the battery but maybe not!

I may still do it if somebody else chimes in with some ideas. Keep in mind I'm just trying to add a little excitement to my DD.

If I cared about chrome piping and flashy looks I would have bought one already. The whole objective of this project was to increase throttle response massively. An ebay intake is just going to route exactly where the original intake is with almost the same piping diameter and a cone filter. Thus doing absolutely nothing. Since this is a stock KA24DE a cone would not benefit me over the stock air box with a K&N drop in air filter. The only reason I would be doing a cone in this application would be for space issues.

EDIT: Also you would loose your second resonator off your stock piping with the ebay intake therefore actually hurting your performance over helping it.

i would only do this if you were to relocate battery to other side of engine bay, or trunk/hatch... then you could rig up some kind of cold air set up that would go down into the bumper area where the battery was, and this would be about the same length of piping as stock...

The pics ddgsxr posted are much better than those drawings. You need some piping between the MAF and the throttle body. If not, the opening and closing of the TB will cause turbulance and may cause the MAF to misread the incoming air.

I read that in Maximum Boost or something...

just get a smaller battery so it doesn't sit on top of the fuse block. Miata or one of those optima halfies

lots of people have done this. i made one out of pvc pipe a loong time ago. it dosent do anything. you wont be able to notice a difference. it makes a cool hiss sound when you turn off the car though.

Maybe ditch the windsheild washer fluid resevoir and find a way to make some piping go down to there, with the MAF somewhere in the middle?

I'm thinking a battery half the size of the standard battery would be best, I'll still use the same parts, picture the piping a little more to the left, and the ultra slim air filter filling up the space where half the original battery was.

Are there any disadvantages to using a smaller battery?

If you're talking about a smaller battery like an Optima red top, than its supposedly better than a standard battery.

But if youre talking about a small battery made for like a civic, I dont think those give enough voltage.

I have an Optima yellow top, and I'm running app 500w x 4 (6 1/2"s) and 300x2 (8" and 12"), and it powers 'em no problem. I'd recommend Optima all the way- granted it did cost $175 for a battery...

Well he doens't have to get a yellow top, red tops are just as good as long as you don't have a massive *** stereo system and they are only like $130 but it'll be the last battery you ever have to buy! I'm in the military and our hazmat gets them for the big flood light generators on the flightline so I got one for free and that was back in 1999 and that bisch is still cranking hard! Good investment either way!
