Okay, I posted something similar over at the dsm site. And all I've seen is about 3 of us with the same problem. My car is a 91 Plymouth Laser RS, so far at that site no one has any clue about it. My car idles as usual but is it suppose to all of sudden drop idle then idle back up and drop again. It does this for like 5solid minutes or couple more. My mom however will go out there and rev the engine up to get it to stop, but even that doesnt work.

Has anyone had their car just idle then it changes and drops idle fast then picks up idle then drop again?? Anyone might know why it does that? Or is it suppose to do that? I know a car idles, but even my old car never done this. It doesnt stay a constant idle.

Well when it drops in rpm's at idle does the car almost stall or does it just return to a normal idle rpm. Then jump up a few hundred rpm's above normal idle rpm. I had a DSM for 3 days and i don't remember much about it but, if they have a Mass Air Flow Sensor and when the rpm's drop if the car almost stalls it sounds like a MAFS problem.

I cant quite explain it but I want to say like it wants to cut out almost but not exactly like that. After it drops it idles back then seconds later drops again like it cant stay at a constant idle, but it only does that few minutes then it finally just quits. I have had my DSM for lil over 3 weeks.

Better late than never, but I would vote for a MAF problem based on this thread.

Why do people with Talons/Lasers/Eclipses refer to their car as dsm's? I know what is stands for--Diamond Star Motor...the factory at which the three cars were produced...but does that mean my wifes car is all of sudden a "DSM"? We don't refer to our cars by the name of the factory where is was made...it just seems kind of dumb. Instead of saying I've had my DSM...say I've had my Laser...because that is what it is...

Yes, I know what my car is thank you. And I dont go around calling my car a DSM. I do say Laser. hehehe Laser, Laser, Laser, Laser. I'm just playing. If you notice above I did give you description of my car in the beginning and no where in that first pargraph is the word DSM. :D

Some people call it what they wanna call it. I'm sorry it bothers you that others say DSM. I know I said DSM afterwards but anyways....what does that have to do with my problem?? :boring I'm not worried about how I say what my car is. I'm trying to get my car in shape. I have a list of things I want to have done like all new pumps, hoses, belts, uhhh....think that is all i need under the hood for right now. Then new tires, re do tint, put in new cdplayer and speakers. So here if I say DSM you can correct me again. lol and i'm not trying to sound mean but like i said before what does that have to do with the problem i'm having??? :rolleyes

PS I'm not the only one that said DSM here. :pface

On the Nissan SR20DE , this is ususly linked to the IACV or its cuircuit. pretty common for it to either get dirty/sticky or just fail , borg warner came out with a beatter unit a few years back and the probelem goes away after its instaled , My old G had the problem till i had the dealer install the Borg unit .

IACV=Idle Air Control Valve

Dark...I wasn't necessarily talking about you, really all the Eclipse/Laser/Talon owners. I just think that it is strange to call a car by the name of the factory at where it was made. Don't mean to dis... on a side note...anyone notice the direction the eclipse's have taken since the recent model change...out went the all-wheel drive, curves and decent performance, in went the standard front wheel drive, crappy handling, and the appeal to chicks...I know I drive my wife's car to work every day...A 2001 Mistubishi Eclipse(notice how I didn't say DSM)

Well how in the world am I suppose to know that about the eclipses, I dont own one, nor have I driven one. If you hate how it handles, buy a new car. Dont complain to me, all I am asking here is about the noise of my car. Why start this? I aint trying to sound mean or rude, you try sitting here type this with a headache and chills. I've been sick. I'm trying to post something about my car and have some help on it by knowing what I should do and I have you talking about whether I should say DSM or Laser. Make a thread if you want to dis DSM. but please stick to subject here.

It's funny you should say that I should sell it...I am :) We're getting a Nissan X-terra after we sell it... and I wasn't really talking directly to you...mainly just to everybody....I had an oppurtunity to purchase a 92 Eagle Talon Turbo and All Wheel Drive...I kick myself for passing up the chance...so I don't have any problem with the DSM line(except for the one in the F&F) from the 90's just the new model Eclipse...Okay back to the origional topic....I would agree with the MAF sensor problem...Also check your vacuum line's to see if a hose is loose...I had that problem with my 91 Pontiac Sunbird...RPM's going up and down at idle...I popped the hood and checked the lines, sure enough one hose was slightly loose causing a little bit of a leak. Hope that helps...I didn't mean to get off w/ you on a bad foot...Sorry to hear you're sick, get well!!!

Ehh....its alright. Somedays I just dont want to be messed with at all. I'm soon to be getting all new hoses, pumps, belts...soon that is lol I dont have a manual book so I cant tell what runs where underneath. I've tried searching the net but I cant find anything that would just show like a diagram or something of the car, like where everything runs at. You can see most on top, but what you cant see is underneath...

I had a 1990 eclispe gs automatic.It did that in my car as well, when i would sit in traffic sometimes and it would go up and down up and down but not that long, once I shifted into netural and back into gear a few times it would go away. People told me that it was a bad alternator but I never found out if that was it. It could have been my driveshaft pulley cause that broke a few times, that pulley works on the alternator as well so maybe thats what it was.
