to be or not to be , to keep or not to keep to Q or not to Q , this is the QQQuestion !My rides are : 91Q , 127Kmi , 93 Ducati 900 SS , 30Kmi , 00 HondaS2000 , 9Kmi. My wife drives 99 Pathfinder .My daughter will start driving in less then 1.5 years . I would not let anybody drive my Q . But I don't want to have another car in the family . So , the Q will go , or given to a good friend , or just become a statue in my back yard .Do you feel the 02-03Q is good enough substitute ? , or 2005 AWD G35 , or FX45 , or 2005 next gen. M45 . I am lost .

If you are substituting one of these cars for a Q, how does that cut down on your car count? Do you drive the S2000 enough to warrant keeping it? I drove the new Q and don't like it as well as my old one. My impression of the old Q is that it was made better than it had to be, the new one gives the feel of being only as good as it needs to be. Value is always a factor with me. You can drive and maintain your old Q for a fraction of the costs of owning a new car. What will your daughter drive? Properly maintained, your old Q would be a very safe ride for her. Ultimately, a very personal choice that only you can make being very honest with yourself on needs and desires.

I agree with most of your points . I am also a stickler for value .(that is why I got the 91Q off lease in 95 in the first place ) .Now , I made a spreadsheet trying to figure out the true cost of owning my 91Q todate , here it is :The car was purchased 7.2 years ago for $21K incl. ext. warranty .$21000 @ conservative 8% per year lost gain over 7.2 years is now $36550.sustract possible (or impossible) resale value today of $6000 , add out of pocketrepair and maintenance over 7.2 years of $6500 , for a true cost of $37000 . Over 86 months , it comes to $430 per month .I put approx . 12Kmi. a year on it . The question from value stand point for this kind of luxury sport sedan is : can you lease , or release something for the same or less ? I don't know .Am I missing something ?

Just a thought, I would not let any new (ie. 16 year old) drive a 1st gen Q. While it is a substantial car, it has way too much power for a new driver. Lots of momentum!

Future cost per month will be less due to no further depreciation and cheaper insurance and registration. Partially offset by higher maintenance. As to 16 year old driver risk:almost guaranteed to wreck any car driven, better to wreck heavy, well built Q worth $5000. Value solution is no driving until 18, that's the deal with my daughter, but her father is cruel and unreasonable.

I agree about higher insurence , but depreciation is already built in , if you lease .I personally never leased cars before , always paid cash for everything I own . Also if you lease for lets say 36 months /36Kmi. , you will probabely pay for one set of tires ? and one set of brake pads . That's about $1000 , or $330 per year , compared to my particular avarage of about $900 / year out of pocket which many people here think is a bargain . But even with only $900 per year out of pocket to maintain my 91Q so far , she costs $430/mo to own . So that is my yardstick . Now , that is not insignificant for a 12 year old car , but I don't mind paying for my special toys . On the other hand , you could probabely get a 3 year lease on a nice lease return 2KQ for less then that , and still have the original factory warranty for a year . Again , am I missing something here ?I also agree with you that my 91Q will be a good safe car for my daughter , she can't drive by herself on permit for a year anyway untill she is 17 . Who knows , mayby she will take after her mother and be a super defensive driver .

I don't know if you should include the opportunity cost of the 8% per year, since you won't have that gain unless you completely eliminate an expense and start investing that money. If you're leasing something else you'd have to add the 8% opportunity cost to your new annual lease payment.

The good side is that your old Q is almost done depreciating, the taxes are low, the insurance is lower, etc. The downside is that it's a 12 or 13 year old car. From an economic standpoint you're almost always better off with an older car. Factors you'll need to consider is the timing chain guide issue, age and condition of your transmission, prior maintenence, etc.

As far as having your 17 year old daughter drive the Q, you know best as to how responsible she is... I was hell on wheels with a Honda Civic wagon because I absolutely hated it. I was probably a better driver when I got a nicer car. I'd feel better with her learning on a $5K Q vs. a $40K one.
