Well, I went to fill up today. I had driven 121.1 miles since the last fill up, and the tank filled at 13.669 gallons. To my calculations, that is 8.86 mpg. All city driving. What gives? That can't be right. What could be wrong with my Q? I use the trip odo to track it because I know the regular odo is not reliable. Is it possible that the trip odo is not accurate? What should I have checked that could be doing this? My maintenance is up to date. What am I overlooking?

Maybe you underfilled your tank some last time and then topped it off right to the top today?

I would check it over the next few weeks and see if this was a fluke before getting too concerned.

Makes sence, but normally I've been getting between 9.5 and 10 mpg so my Q loves to suck up the gas. Next ttime I'm on the highway, I'll do 60mph for a minute or use mile markers to see if my trip odo is accurate. Just to eliminate that from the equation.

I never trust urban mileage calculations because its so varied, depending on if you drive rush hour or evenings, or how many stoplights you get stuck at. I've gotten between 10 and 14mpg city on my Qs.

That makes me feel so much better about my 12-14 mpg average in 98% L.A. city traffic. And my foot is solid lead. The other day one of my buddies said "do you ever drive slow?" to which I replied "No"

I agree...

I was also thinking lou, maybe this is due to the extra ethanol going in, compared to last years gas...

The only way to do it is to fill up next to an on ramp. Get on the freeway and drive at least 200 miles, then get off and fill and calculate.

If you have short tires, all bets are off. Check odometer with a GPS device, laptop with mapping program is best.

Checked last two tanks since I started driving the Q again (a/c was broke for a few weeks).

16.8 mpg last tank 50/50 city/highway, 100% A/C use, not trying very hard to get good mileage but avoiding too many WOT romps.

17.9 mpg this morning's fill up. 50/50 city/hwy, 100% A/C use. Trying hard to get good mpg. Attempting to never exceed 2-2.5K rpm, use cruise control when possible, top speed is 63 mph if I want to keep it at 2K rpm (sometimes I'm under the speed limit as long as I am not blocking traffic), and a big help is avoid hard braking. Every time you brake hard you wasted a bunch of fuel. When I am in "mpg mode" I try to shift to neutral as far from the light, stop sign, or traffic backup as I can. You have to really plan ahead to avoid hard braking. Also, you don't want to do it when someone is following close. I think I can improve this more with more coasting to stops. It really takes disipline to drive like that but I've been doing it in my Toyota p/u for a while in an attempt to get best MPG I can. The Q is totally different tho so it's taking some getting used to. I have a 75 mile per day commute so I need to save every gallon I can!
