CarInsuranceComparison.com just released it's 2015 edition of the worst drivers by state. The rankings are based on several categories:

-Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
•Failure to Obey (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that involved Traffic Signals, Not Wearing Seat Belts, and Driving with an Invalid Driver’s License)
•Drunk Driving (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that Involved Alcohol)
•Speeding (Percentage of Driving Fatalities that were Speed-Related)
•Careless Driving (Pedestrian & Bicyclist Fatalities per 100,000 Population)

here they are:

#10:Mississippi: best stat: #46 in speeding
worst stat: 3rd in fatalities per 100 million miles travelled

Bubba comment: Perhaps first in hearing "y'all watch this" prior to accidents?

#9 Delaware: best stat: #28 in drunk driving
worst stat: #2 in careless driving

Bubba comment: I know the state has the reputation for being boring to drive thru, I lived there for a year, but I was surprised to see this on the list.

#7 North Dakota (tie)
Best stat: #51 in careless driving
worst stat: #1 in drunk driving

Bubba comment: It sounds like North Dakotans can drive well while sober, but can't hold their liquor that well . Burrp.

#7 Hawaii (tie)
best stat: #33 in failure to obey
worst stat: #4 in drunk driving.

Bubba comment: It appears Hawaiians are polite when they get nailed for DUI.

#6 Arizona:
best stat: #47 in drunk driving
worst stat: #3 in careless driving

Bubba comment: I guess the residents' poor driving can not be blamed on alcohol.

#5 Louisiana

best stat: #33 for speeding
worst stat: #1 for failure to obey.

Bubba comment. One could say they put the "Nah" In Nah 'rleans...?

#4 Texas

best stat: #18 for failure to obey
worst stat: #6 for drunk driving

Bubba comment. I guess I'd be drunk too if I was a Cowboy fan these days. Texas is one of two states to score in the the worst 20 in every category.

#3 New Mexico (tie)
best stat: #16 for failure to obey
worst stat: #5 for careless driving

Bubba comment: NM has stormed it's way to be among the worst. they jumped 17 positions from last year rankings. Wow.

#3 South Carolina (tie)
best stat: #36 in failure to obey
worst stat: #3 in drunk driving

Bubba comment: One can conclude they have a DUI problem down there, but interestingly, they rank among the better states for seat belt compliance, license compliance, and complying with street signs. Go figure.

#1 Montana
best stat: #20 for speeding
worst stat: #1 for fatalities per 100 million miles travelled.

Bubba comment: Besides Texas, it is the only other state to rank among the worst 20 in every category.

Overall notes: Some interesting data. It seems many like to bash the northeastern states for bad driving, but according to this data, that's really not the case. I'm sure someone will inevitably offer examples of bad driving when they last drove thru the area, and extrapolate that every driver there must be bad. But just like political campaigning, when you introduce facts and add 'em all together, many claims end up being incorrect. For example: NJ, where the state bird is the middle finger , and yellow traffic lights mean accelerate, was ranked #45. New York, where people don't use turn signals when changing lanes (as it telegraphs intentions) was #28. And Massachusetts, where drivers use the opposite turn signal when changing lanes (to fake out other drivers who are determined to prevent anyone getting in front of them) was #41.

Thoughts? Comments?

I was in Montana driving along once when I came across a car that had a collision with a free range cow on the highway. Yes, there was a sign warning of said FRCs along the highway. Seriously who lets cows roam free near a highway?

i love seeing out of state people on the highways here in ct. they all get undertaken, hollered at, and flipped off for doing the posted speed limit. us natives know that number is just a formality. speed up, or gtfo of the way, we have things to see and people to do.

in town, i have noticed a surge of irresponsible behavior. passing at a double yellow, not even slowing down through a stop sign or traffic light, irrational speeding, openly smoking pot, cell phone use. it's getting ridiculous.

FWIW, Connecticut ranked #28 overall, though #4 in drunk driving. (Burrp).

Montana drivers are okay.

The problem are the animals on the road.
