I've driven cars before that I didn't like aspects of it or something, but I never drove a car that I absolutely hated...until this weekend. In comes the Toyota Rav 4! How has this thing been on the road so long and is so popular? I was diving one that couldn't be more than two years old, I could only imagine earlier production models.

1/ The seats are soooooooooo uncomfortable. I've never gotten out of a car with my back hurting before after a long drive.
2/ The seats are so thin I could feel my toddlers feet kicking it....not feel the impact, FEEL THE FOOT!
3/ There is no way to open/release the hatch back/trunk from inside. Only unlock it, and then someone has to struggle to release and open it outside with no clear tactile indicator of the release handle. Then there is no real lift support for the trunk.
4/ The hood, oh my God the hood...should have been number one, waves at high speed looking like it is about to fly off. Once you get above maybe 70 the hood starts looking like waves in the ocean....imagine doing 90mph.
5/ The seatbelt indicator starts going off I think as soon as you turn over the engine...and it is LOUD.
6/ The EV mode makes NO sense. This is the first time I've driven a hybrid, so I don't know if it's like this with every hybrid, but the thing shuts off at 25mph. What's the point in that? Unless you're in heavy traffic or a school zone, how do you stay below 25mph constantly to benefit from this feature. If it kicked back in after going over that speed automatically, I'd understand that.
7/ The lane drift is vicious in its correction.
8/ The bluetooth android auto connection is terrible in initial correction.
9/ And no navigation without a subscription REALLY? (at least I didn't search more than 5 minutes so who knows...but if I have to search 5 min and still not find it that's a problem.)
10/ The steering wheel is stiff/harsh best way I can describe it. My arm is fatigued after a couple hours.

I can probably come up with more, but thank God I only had to drive it for three days. What's your worse driven car?

I agree that the RAV4 has shortcomings. As far as it being the worst car ever? Uh, no. Not even close. Here are two that I've driven that scream "hold my beer" in terms of being bad. First is the Yugo GV. It was so awful, at one point they tried to sell 2 for the price of one....new. The other was the Subaru 360. The first Subie model ever imported to the US. A dreadful, tinny, little deathtrap of a Kei car. Fortunately subsequent Subaru models improved. Honorable mention to the Citroen 2CV. I wouldn't call it the worst as it was so ugly and awful, it was almost cute. Heck they still draw attention when you see one, but it made the RAV-4 seem like a Bentley.

Dodge Caliber CVT. The thing rental nightmares are made of.

I also had a rental ford fiesta and blew the transmission at only 10k miles. But at least the handling was nimble.

LOL James, I rented a Caliber once too. It was dreadful. Oh, how about that Mitsubishi Mirage rental that got autocrossed at Carlisle a few years ago.

The "My-Rage" as I came to call it was a perfectly acceptable rental toilet. Could have used some better tires that didn't chunk apart on the track though.
I think the Altima Hybrid was one of the worse rentals we got at Carlisle. It would boil the power steering fluid and throw all sorts of fits.

Y'all are reminding me of some video FB suggested for me this morning. It was a 19.99 U-Haul rental doing big doughnuts in a parking lot with a bunch of people in the middle recording it. Kind of funny. Guessing U-Haul didn't think so. :chuckle:

edit: I just did a YouTube search. Apparently these guys weren't the first to think of that.

Oh yeah I remember that awful Altima, even equipped with the much hyped "NASA-inspired-zero-gravity" seats (pronounced "memory foam"). IMHO, as painfully anemic and numb as that car was to autocross, as an ordinary transportation appliance, it probably had just enough virtues to keep it off the worst car ever list.

Nissan has never really "got it" about hybrids. The Altimas weren't just a terrible ride, they were awful to work on. So were the '14 Pathy hybrids. The '17 Rogue hybrids were nice to work on (finally) but they were slugs. Now Nissan is so far behind everybody else in the hybrid game, I wonder if they'll ever catch up. You'd think Nissan's extensive EV experience would translate directly to HEV, but in the real world it doesn't work that way. The key to hybrid usability is a smooth interface and seamless combining of horsepower with wattage, and even a humble Prius beats the crap out of anything Nissan has built in that regard.

Compared to other SUVs, the RAV4 typically offers good fuel economy, especially with hybrid options, appealing to budget-conscious consumers.

Have to agree with the Dodge Caliber. Never owned one, but had one as a rental for a week.
There was nothing remotely redeemable about that POS.
As far as owning bad cars, that would be any Fords. Had 4 of them total. Two were company cars, one was an old Escort I picked up cheap as a winter beater and I had a mid 90's Explorer for a bit. Never a Ford again.

To the OP's post, I personally don't get but find fascinating how some folks literally worship Toyota. I mean, they make some good ones, but IMHO they always take the safe route, and rarely make stuff that is truly fun to drive, outside of specialty examples. But I'm not hating - more power to folks that drive and love their Toyotas - but IMO it's almost become a cult of sorts for some LOL.
