OK... I did some checking since we talked about this by email. The diagnostic display is looking for ground on the brake sensor circuit. When it doesn't "see" ground - it turns on the "Brake Pads Worn" message. What you need to do to get rid of the message is make sure the diagnostic display sees ground. You'll need to remove the cluster and somehow connect pin 17 in the diagram to a metal portion of the chassis. A screw going into metal somewhere should be fine.
If you're lucky, Nissan left the brown/yellow stripe wire in the plug that goes into that connector. If it's there it will make your job a lot easier.
Of course I'm working out of a service manual - not real world experience on this. So - if something goes up in smoke, don't blame me

Second idea. You mentioned that you replaced your cluster because of intermittant p/s and speedometer issues. I've always heard that replacing the speed sensor cures this - not that it's an issue with the cluster. How long has this new cluster cured the problem?
It might also be easier to swap the diagnostic portion of the clusters with each other - assuming you still have your old cluster. That way your diagnostic display would be set up to work with your car that is missing the brake pad sensors.
Good luck!
