Hi,Yesterday i got a Type R and a M-850 installed in my car yesterdayWhen i came to pick up the car they guy who serviced it told me to work in the voice coil for 4-5 days by not cranking it up too high and to keep my bass setting to -5. Im just wondering after the 4-5 days can i truly blast the system buy putting my bass to 0 and cranking the volume to around the 20 mark? Im just scared b/c i dont want to blow the sub.

alsois a new sub supposed to have that "burning" smell?the guy told me that it should subside after 4-5 days.. is that normal?

THANK YOU!

I can say without a doubt that out of the 30 to 40 thousand customers that my business has had, not a single one of them have ever broken anything in!

Let her rip! Just don't distort it..... use common sense!

Age and common sense have nothing to do with each other. So you can't use that as an excuse

But that smell is common when firing up a system for the 1st time.

Oils, glues, and other residue that's coming off the sub. One of a voice coil's job is to disipate heat, and thus it's power rating in watts. It's actually a thermal rating, stating how much heat a voicecoil can disipate. When it gets warm, residue can evaporate or possibly even burn off depending on its flash point.

As for breaking in a voicecoil, that doesn't really happen. What does "break in" are the moving parts, the surround and spider(s). They will loosen up a tad and usually then produce a tad more bass. It's measureable, but typically not audible.

FWIW, I break in all of my speakers with hours of pink noise and my subs with hours of 20-25hz sine sweeps. That all happens naturally while playing music, I just accelerate the process.
