329.6 miles, 9.965 gallons. 33.0 mpg.

I changed my oil and switched to Mobil 1 synthetic as I've been using the stuff for about 15 years now. Been averaging 30-31 so it was good for a 2-3 mpg difference. My commute is the same with the same combined half highway half city drive.

My driving habits are such that I usually do not go over 3100 rpm when accelerating. 1600 miles so far.

Sounds like what I was doing... Mobil1 synth, and my shift point was 3k RPM on the dot.

Consistently averaged 30 MPG until the last 3 tanks, which plummeted unexpectedly to 27 MPG... so keep an eye out about 7,000 miles to make sure it stays consistent.

Ugh. I'm still struggling to get some decent milage, but this cold weather is making it impossible. I'm averaging around 25mpg in city driving. I've been driving really conservatively, I suppose I still need to find the best way to drive this CVT.

Great to hear you have broken the 33 mpg barrier. and on "combined" driving!

Perhaps there is hope for the rest of us yet.

If 4 quarts of Mobile one is part of the answer then I guess all us V owners will have to line up for the 'oil upgrade'. Here in The Great White North, Mobile one is $9.98 a ltr! (Next time we are driving through Montana, Guess where I'll be stocking up on Moblie One, 5-30) See you at the Helena WallyMart, 'no $ales tax', auto section!

The other thing we may be guilty of, is trying to drive a CVT like everthing else we have ever owned, that is, the habit of, the harder you hit the gass, the faster you go. With the Versa CVT, I am finding a real light touch on the gas actually gets the same job done.

I notice that at 65 mph the Versa tach reads about 2300 rpm, so when I accelerate for the highway, I now watch the tach AND the speedo. I just keep it in that 2300rpm range and let the CVT system keep pulling.

It will, and it does accelerate almost as good as if you were pushing the rpms up into the 3000's screaming the engine and wasting gas on accelleration that your not getting anyway.

I am finding with my CVT, less is more.

Longo,

Your observatiions about acceleration are mine as well. I can get the Versa up to speed pretty quickly keeping it at 3000 RPM's and below. I believe it really makes a difference in mileage. When I'm on the on ramp to the freeway I just keep it at 3000 and I'm at appropriate speed in no time.

I have a light touch on the accelerator and it seems to work well. Good luck with that oil change and hope to see you get to the 30 mark.

And One More Thing....If anyone wants to have a dramatic lesson on how to drive the CVT ecquiped Versa, here it is.

Next time you are on the highway, set the cruise control and carfully watch the Versa give you a lesson on how the CVT system works. The car is so quiet that you need to keep an eye on the Tach, for the demonstration.

When you set the cruise, the RPMs then take over for the adjustments for hills. The Versa is the most acurate Cruise Control I have ever seen. You will not gain or loose one MPH going up, or coming down the hills...it's kind of creepy watching the Tach and seeing the CVT system quietly and efficiently at work.

The steepest hill on my runs to town barely put the RPMs over 3000, humming a litttle bit, to get over the top, at exactly the set speed...every time, all the time. So I have come to the conclusion that if you are controling the car yourself, with the throttle, just drive it easy, like the cruise control does....also, a very soft touch on the gas at a stop will get you going just as fast as the guy beside you, and then it's more like Back Off the gas fast when you are up to legal speed. Sure you can tell the Officer that it was the cars fault that you were speeding ... but, good luck on that!

On steeper hills, though, the cruise doesn't always do the best job of keeping rpm's down, although as you say, the speed doesn't change at all.

I have one 2.5 mile hill I go up at 70mph every night, and if I let the cruise handle it, the engine is at 3500rpm much of the way. If I take over just before the bottom and keep it at 3000rpm all the way, the speed stays nearly the same without the "catch up" section where the car realizes that it's not going to be able to hold 70mph. Coming down that same hill I also shift to Neutral and come down at 750rpm instead of the 2500rpm with the cruise.

Other than hills like that, though, I let the cruise take over and consistently get over 30mpg in the winter and 32mpg in warmer weather. (15,500 miles so far.)

I keep it under 2500, but i still only get about 23-24 mpg.
